IBPS PO Mains 2026: 6-Week Study Plan & What Comes After Prelims
The Prelims are over. Mains is on 4 October — exactly six weeks away. And the paper you are about to sit is not the one most study material was written for.
- IBPS PO Mains 2026 is on 4 October 2026 — six weeks from today. Prelims were held on 22 and 23 August 2026.
- The Mains objective paper is now 170 questions for 200 marks in 160 minutes, up from 145 questions. More questions, the same marks, less time per question.
- Start now. The prelims result is expected in September. Waiting for it can leave you just two to three weeks.
- Prelims marks do not count. Your rank comes from Mains and Interview in an 80:20 ratio.
- General/Economy/Banking Awareness is the biggest scoring block and needs no calculation — treat it as your rank-changer.
- A new Personality Test sits between the Mains result and the Interview. It is mandatory but non-qualifying.
Why you should start IBPS PO Mains 2026 preparation today, not after the result
Every year the same thing happens. Candidates walk out of the Preliminary examination, decide to “take a break until the result”, and then discover that the result and the Mains exam are only a few weeks apart. By the time they restart, half the window is gone.
Look at the arithmetic for this cycle. Prelims: 22 and 23 August 2026. Mains: 4 October 2026. That is 42 days in total. IBPS has not announced the prelims result date, but the recruitment schedule points to September. In the previous cycle the prelims were held on 23 and 24 August 2025 and the result was declared on 26 September 2025 — if something similar happens this year, you would have barely a week left.
The honest rule: if your prelims attempt was in the same neighbourhood as the cut-offs you have seen in past years, prepare as though you have qualified. The worst case is that you have spent six weeks strengthening banking awareness and data interpretation — which is exactly what you will need for the next attempt anyway.
There is a second reason this year specifically. The Mains pattern changed, and a lot of the material floating around still describes the old one. If you need the full picture first — eligibility, salary, post-wise details and books — our IBPS PO 2026 exam page carries all of it, and the banking exams hub lists the other cycles running alongside this one.
What changed in the IBPS PO Mains 2026 pattern?
Under CRP PO/MT-XVI, IBPS revised the Main Examination. The headline change is the question count: the objective paper went from 145 questions to 170, while the total stayed at 200 marks. Nothing was added to the clock.
| Element | Earlier cycles | Mains 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Objective questions | 145 | 170 |
| Objective marks | 200 | 200 (unchanged) |
| English Language marks | 40 | 20 |
| Awareness section | General/Economy/Banking | Expanded to include digital & financial awareness |
| Descriptive paper | 25 marks / 30 min | 25 marks / 30 min (unchanged) |
| Stage after Mains | Interview | Personality Test → Interview |
Work out what this does to your pace. With 170 questions in 160 minutes you have roughly 56 seconds per question if you attempt everything. Nobody attempts everything. But the number tells you the paper now rewards a different skill: fast, confident selection of what to leave alone.
Sectional timing applies, as it does in the Prelims. Each section has its own clock and you cannot carry spare minutes forward or go back to a section you have closed. That makes a rehearsed section order far more valuable than raw speed — practise your mocks with the timer on, not paused.
⚠️ Read the English change correctly. The section’s marks were cut from 40 to 20, but the number of questions went up. That means each English question is worth less than one mark — and each wrong answer still costs a quarter of that question’s marks. English is no longer where ranks are won. Do not spend a third of your preparation there out of habit.
Negative marking is unchanged: 0.25 marks deducted for every wrong answer in both Prelims and Mains objective papers. Unattempted questions cost nothing. The descriptive paper has no negative marking.
IBPS PO Mains 2026 section-wise weightage
Here is the structure as widely reported for the 2026 Mains. The overall totals — 170 questions, 200 marks, 160 minutes, and General Awareness at 50 questions for 60 marks — are consistent across sources. The exact split inside the other sections can shift between notifications, so confirm it against the information handout attached to your call letter.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Marks per question |
|---|---|---|---|
| General / Economy / Banking / Digital Awareness | 50 | 60 | 1.2 |
| Reasoning & Computer Aptitude | 40 | 60 | 1.5 |
| Data Analysis & Interpretation | 40 | 60 | 1.5 |
| English Language | 40 | 20 | 0.5 |
| Objective total | 170 | 200 | 160 minutes |
| Descriptive (typed, English) | — | 25 | 30 minutes |
| Main Examination total | — | 225 | 3 hours 10 minutes |
Read that fourth column again, because it is the whole strategy in one number. A Reasoning question is worth three English questions. A banking awareness question — which takes ten seconds if you know it and is unanswerable if you do not — is worth more than two English questions.
The awareness section is 60 marks of pure recall. No calculation, no reading passage, no puzzle grid. For a candidate with limited time, it is the highest return per hour in the entire paper. Plan accordingly.
Your 6-week IBPS PO Mains 2026 study plan
This plan assumes roughly five to six focused hours a day. If you are working full time, do the mock test and analysis on your days off and shrink the weekday load — cut the volume, not the number of days. Consistency beats intensity over six weeks.
| Week | Dates | Main focus |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | 24 – 30 August | Diagnostic mock · advanced DI · start the awareness backlog |
| Week 2 | 31 August – 6 September | High-level puzzles & seating · computer aptitude · daily awareness |
| Week 3 | 7 – 13 September | Caselet & data sufficiency · begin descriptive practice |
| Week 4 | 14 – 20 September | Full-length mocks twice a week · fix the weakest section |
| Week 5 | 21 – 27 September | Mock every other day · six-month awareness revision |
| Week 6 | 28 September – 3 October | Revision only. No new topics. Sleep schedule fixed. |
| Exam | 4 October 2026 | IBPS PO Main Examination |
Week 1 (24 – 30 August): find out where you actually stand
Take a full-length Mains mock in the new 170-question format on day one. Not to score well — to find out what happens to you at minute 120 when there are still fifty questions left. Most candidates have never sat this paper at this density.
- Move to higher-level Data Interpretation: caselet DI, missing-data DI, and DI combined with arithmetic. Mains DI is not scaled-up prelims DI.
- Open your banking awareness backlog. Start with the last six months of RBI policy decisions, monetary policy rates and major banking news.
- Write down the three question types that cost you the most time in the mock. Those are your Week 2 and Week 3 targets.
Week 2 (31 August – 6 September): reasoning at Mains difficulty
Reasoning and Computer Aptitude carries 60 marks across 40 questions — the joint-highest weight per question in the paper. Mains puzzles are longer, carry more variables and often combine two conditions.
- One heavy puzzle set daily: floor-and-flat, month-and-date, box-based, and comparison-based arrangements.
- Do not neglect computer aptitude. It is a small, finite syllabus and the questions are usually straightforward marks.
- Thirty minutes of current affairs every single day, without exception. Six weeks of this is worth more than a panicked three-day revision at the end.
Week 3 (7 – 13 September): the hard bits, plus your first essay
- Data sufficiency, quantity comparison and caselet DI — the three areas most candidates skip and then meet in the exam.
- Write your first timed descriptive answer this week. Typed on a keyboard, thirty minutes, no editing afterwards.
- The prelims result may land around this period. Whatever it says, your plan does not change this week.
Week 4 (14 – 20 September): mocks become the method
From here, mock tests stop being a check on your preparation and become the preparation. Two full-length Mains mocks this week, each followed by an analysis session that is longer than the mock itself.
- For every wrong answer, write one line: was it a concept gap, a calculation slip, or a bad decision to attempt it at all? The third category is usually the largest and the easiest to fix.
- Fix your section order and stick to it. Decide now whether you open with awareness (fast marks, builds confidence) or reasoning (needs a fresh brain).
Week 5 (21 – 27 September): peak load
- A mock every second day, always at the same time of day as your actual exam slot.
- Full six-month current affairs revision, with a separate pass on banking and financial awareness.
- Two more timed descriptive answers — one economic or banking topic, one social or ethics topic.
Week 6 (28 September – 3 October): stop learning, start consolidating
No new topics in the final week. Starting something new now creates the feeling that you do not know enough, which is the single most damaging thing you can carry into the exam hall. Revise what you already have.
- Formula sheets, banking terms, RBI rates and your own error log. Nothing else.
- One last full mock around 30 September or 1 October, then stop testing.
- Download the Mains call letter as soon as it is released at ibps.in and read the information handout properly. Confirm the exact section split and timings there.
- Shift your sleep so you are alert at your reporting time. Two nights is not enough; start in Week 5.
How should you prepare for the IBPS PO descriptive paper?
The descriptive paper is 25 marks in 30 minutes, typed in English on the computer immediately after the objective test. Twenty-five marks sounds small next to 200 — until you remember the merit list is built to two decimal places.
On content, the notification is clear: the paper may broadly cover economic and social issues, emerging trends in banking and technology, current events and ethics. It also notes the paper may be evaluated through an automated scoring mechanism that assesses writing quality.
On the exact question types: sources genuinely disagree. Most of the recently updated ones say letter writing has been dropped and the paper is now Essay plus Comprehension; several others still list Essay plus Letter Writing. We could not confirm either version against the official notification text, so we will not state one as fact. Prepare for both — the overlap in skills is large — and take the definitive answer from the information handout issued with your Mains call letter.
Practical preparation, in order of value:
- Type, do not write. This is a keyboard test. If you type slowly, thirty minutes disappears fast. Practise on a computer, not on paper.
- Build a structure you can reuse. Introduction, two or three body paragraphs with one idea each, a balanced conclusion. Same skeleton every time; only the content changes.
- Collect ten themes, not fifty. Digital banking and UPI, financial inclusion, NPAs and asset quality, cyber fraud, artificial intelligence in banking, green finance, MSME credit, banking consolidation, financial literacy, ethics in banking.
- Write plainly. Short sentences, correct grammar, no memorised flourishes. An automated evaluator rewards clarity and coherence, not vocabulary you cannot control.
What is the new IBPS PO Personality Test?
CRP PO/MT-XVI introduces a stage that did not exist in earlier cycles. Candidates shortlisted from the Main Examination now sit a Personality Test before the Common Interview.
Three things to understand about it:
- It is a self-report assessment — you respond about your own preferences and behaviour, not about banking knowledge.
- It is mandatory. If you want to attend the Interview, you have to take it.
- It is non-qualifying and carries no marks. You cannot fail it and it does not enter the merit list. Your profile is simply placed before the interview panel.
So there is nothing to study. The only sensible approach is to answer consistently and honestly — self-report instruments generally include internal checks for contradictory responses, and a profile that reads as manufactured helps nobody in the interview room.
How is the IBPS PO 2026 final merit list calculated?
This is the part that changes how you should allocate the next six weeks, and a surprising number of candidates get it wrong.
| Stage | Marks | Counts in final merit? |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary Examination | 100 | No — qualifying only |
| Main Examination | 225 | Yes — 80% weight |
| Personality Test | — | No — non-qualifying |
| Common Interview | 100 | Yes — 20% weight |
The Interview has a minimum qualifying mark of 40% — relaxed to 35% for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates. Clear that, and the Mains score does four-fifths of the work in deciding your rank and your bank allotment.
Practically: however your Prelims went, it is now irrelevant to your rank. Everything from here rests on 4 October.
IBPS PO 2026 timeline: what happens and when
| Event | Date | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Notification (CRP PO/MT-XVI) | 1 July 2026 | Completed |
| Vacancy corrigendum | 20 July 2026 | Completed |
| Prelims call letter | 14 August 2026 | Completed |
| Preliminary Examination | 22 – 23 August 2026 | Completed |
| Prelims result | To Be Notified ⚠️ | Schedule indicates September 2026 |
| Mains call letter | To Be Notified ⚠️ | Usually shortly before the exam |
| Main Examination | 4 October 2026 | Confirmed |
| Personality Test & Interview | To Be Notified ⚠️ | After the Mains result |
On vacancies, the number has moved twice and is not finished moving. Three of the eleven participating banks were marked “Not Reported” when the notification came out, which is why the total keeps climbing:
| Stage | Total | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Notification, 1 July 2026 | 6,715 | Indian Bank, UCO Bank and Union Bank of India all marked Not Reported |
| Corrigendum, 20 July 2026 | 7,365 | Indian Bank reported 650 posts |
| Subsequently reported | 7,565 | UCO Bank added 200 posts |
| Still outstanding | TBN ⚠️ | Union Bank of India had not reported as of 23 August 2026 |
The 7,365 figure is the one attached to the dated 20 July corrigendum listed on the IBPS site. The rise to 7,565 is widely reported and the arithmetic fits exactly, but we have not been able to confirm it against a dated official document — so treat 7,365 as the floor and 7,565 as the likely current figure, with room for one more increase if Union Bank reports. IBPS calls these counts indicative throughout the cycle. Check ibps.in for the position on the day you need it.
The eleven participating banks are Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Punjab National Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, UCO Bank and Union Bank of India. Allotment happens after the interview, on merit and the preference order you submitted.
One thing we are deliberately not giving you: an expected Mains cut-off. Every number circulating right now is an estimate made before a single answer key exists. Chasing an invented target changes how you attempt the paper, usually for the worse. Attempt what you can attempt accurately, and let the cut-off be whatever it turns out to be.
And if this cycle does not go your way, it is worth knowing early which other exams you already qualify for on age and education — the TaiyarHo eligibility checker will tell you in under a minute. Our guide on what to do if you do not clear a government exam is an honest read on that, and worth having in mind before the result rather than after it.
