1What is NABARD Development Assistant?
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is India's apex institution for rural credit and agricultural development. The Development Assistant (DA) is a Group B post supporting NABARD's core functions — data processing, correspondence, rural outreach administration, and banking operations — across its regional and sub-offices in every state.
Unlike many clerical posts in public sector banks, NABARD DAs work in a development-banking environment with direct exposure to rural finance, Kisan Credit Card operations, and government scheme implementation. The post carries a higher starting salary than most bank clerks, with strong job security and promotional avenues within NABARD.
Selection is done in two stages: a qualifying Prelims and a merit-based Mains (Objective + Descriptive), followed by a Language Proficiency Test (LPT) in the regional language.

Indian citizen. Candidates from Nepal, Bhutan, or certain communities as per GoI norms are also eligible.

Minimum: 21 years | Maximum: 35 years. OBC: +3 yrs (38) | SC/ST: +5 yrs (40) | PwBD: +10 yrs General (45), +13 yrs OBC (48), +15 yrs SC/ST (50) | Ex-Servicemen: service rendered + 3 yrs (max 50). No cumulative relaxation.
🎓 Qualification – DA (General)
Bachelor's Degree in any discipline with minimum 50% marks. SC/ST/PwBD/EXS: Pass class. Basic computer knowledge required.
🎓 Qualification – DA (Hindi)
Bachelor's Degree with Hindi AND English as subjects (or Hindi as medium). Min 50% marks (pass for SC/ST/PwBD/EXS).
⚠️ Important: You may apply for only one State/Regional Office and only one post (DA or DA Hindi). You must be proficient in the official language of that State — tested via the Language Proficiency Test at the final stage, unless you studied that language as a subject in Class 10 or 12.
🎓 Free pre-examination training: NABARD arranges free pre-exam training for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates before the Prelims. In past cycles candidates applied by e-mail as specified in the notification. Check the training clause in the notification PDF when the next cycle opens — very few aspirants use this.

💡 Key rules: Prelims is qualifying only — marks not counted in final merit. Negative marking: 1/4th mark (–0.25) per wrong answer. Sectional timing: 20 minutes per section, 60 minutes total. Paper is bilingual (Hindi & English) except the language tests. You must clear both the individual sectional cut-offs and the aggregate cut-off. Shortlisting for Mains is in a calling ratio of a maximum 1:25 against vacancies.
For DA (Hindi), Numerical Ability is replaced by a Test of Professional Knowledge (Hindi/English) — 30 questions, 30 marks, 20 minutes.

💡 Mains rules: Objective tests total 150 marks in 105 minutes (sectional timing as shown above); the Descriptive English paper is 50 marks in 30 minutes — 135 minutes overall. Negative marking of 1/4th mark (–0.25) applies to the objective tests only. Note there is no objective English section in Mains — English is tested only through the descriptive paper, while Computer Knowledge carries a heavy 40 marks. Final merit is prepared State-wise on Mains marks alone, subject to biometric verification. If the exam runs across multiple sessions, scores are normalised using the equipercentile method.
For DA (Hindi) the Mains pattern differs: Reasoning 20/20 (25 min), Professional Knowledge (Hindi/English) 50/50 (35 min), General Awareness 40/40 (25 min), Computer Knowledge 40/40 (20 min), Descriptive English 3 questions/50 marks (30 min) — 200 marks in 135 minutes.
Phase III — Language Proficiency Test (LPT)
Selected and waitlisted candidates must qualify the LPT in the official language of the State they applied for, conducted at the Regional Office of that State after the Mains result. The LPT is qualifying in nature — it does not affect final merit — but failing it means no appointment, however high your Mains rank.
✅ LPT exemption (many aspirants miss this): If you passed Class 10 or Class 12 with the declared official language of that State as one of your subjects, you are exempt from the LPT. You must submit valid proof — the Class 10 or 12 marksheet showing that language as a subject.

Cut-offs are released state-wise and category-wise. Since Prelims is qualifying, the Mains cut-off determines final selection. Indicative ranges based on the 2022–23 cycle (170 vacancies):

💡 Important: NABARD Development Assistant is on NABARD's own bank-style pay scale, not a 7th CPC pay-matrix level. Dearness Allowance follows the institution's own periodic revision, so the ₹46,500 gross figure moves with each DA revision. The 8th Pay Commission (constituted November 2025, report expected around mid-2027) has not been implemented and does not apply here.

NABARD DAs can be promoted to Assistant Manager (Grade A) through departmental exams. Internal pathways, seniority-based promotions, and specialised rural development roles are available. Many DAs also prepare for the NABARD Grade A Officer exam as an upgrade.

Applications for the 2025–26 cycle (Advt. No. 08/DA/2025-26) closed on 03 February 2026 and that cycle is now at the LPT stage. No next-cycle notification has been announced. When it releases, these are the steps:

Master NABARD & Agriculture GK
General Awareness with a rural/agri focus is the key differentiator. Study NABARD's functions, major rural schemes (PM-KISAN, PMFBY, RKVY), and Kisan Credit Card deeply — other bank exams don't test this.
Don't Neglect the Descriptive Test
50 marks in Mains come from Descriptive English. Most aspirants under-prepare this. Write 2–3 formal letters and essays on banking/economy topics every week. Neat structure scores consistently well.
Prelims is a Speed Game
With sectional timing (20 min per section), accuracy wins over attempts. Avoid questions you are unsure about — the –0.25 penalty adds up. Target 70–75 correct answers to safely clear cut-offs.
Prepare for Language Proficiency
Even a high Mains score is worthless if you fail the LPT. Check the regional language requirement for the state you apply to. Practise reading and writing in that language consistently.
State Selection is Strategic
Apply to your home state where possible. High-competition states (Delhi, UP, Maharashtra) need higher scores. Lower-competition states can be a better bet for the same preparation effort.
