1What is SSC Stenographer 2026?
SSC Stenographer is a central government recruitment exam conducted annually by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). It recruits Stenographers for Grade C (Group B Non-Gazetted, Pay Level 6) and Grade D (Group C, Pay Level 4) positions in various central government ministries, departments, and subordinate offices across India.
The selection process has two stages: a Computer-Based Test (CBT) and a Shorthand Skill Test. The CBT covers General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and English Language & Comprehension. Candidates who qualify the CBT are called for the Skill Test, which is purely qualifying.

Final step6SSC Stenographer 2026 CBT Exam Pattern
The Computer-Based Test (CBT) is 200 marks in 2 hours. There is a negative marking of −0.25 marks for every wrong answer. The English section alone carries 50% of total marks — making it the most critical section.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 50 | 50 | −0.25/wrong |
| General Awareness | 50 | 50 | −0.25/wrong |
| English Language & Comprehension | 100 | 100 | −0.25/wrong |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 2 hours |
7Skill Test – Shorthand (Qualifying)
The Shorthand Skill Test is the defining stage that separates SSC Steno from other SSC exams. It is purely qualifying — passing it is mandatory to get on the final merit list, but its marks are not added to the CBT score.
| Grade | Speed | Dictation | Transcription Time | Software |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade C | 100 wpm | 10 minutes | 40 minutes | PAGASUS / Digital Steno Machine |
| Grade D | 80 wpm | 10 minutes | 50 minutes | PAGASUS / Digital Steno Machine |
Failing the Skill Test means disqualification — even if your CBT rank is among the top candidates. There is no second attempt within the same cycle. You must appear in the next cycle.
Keep your transcription error rate below ~5% of total words. Accuracy matters more than just speed. Practice 2 hours of shorthand daily for at least 4–5 months before the exam.
