2026 Key Update

SSC Stenographer 2024 cycle joining is wrapping up. The 2026 notification is expected in September–October 2026. English section carries 100 out of 200 marks in CBT — the single biggest scoring opportunity. Shorthand Skill Test is qualifying and must be cleared to get the final merit.

1What is SSC Stenographer 2026?

SSC Stenographer is a central government recruitment exam conducted annually by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). It recruits Stenographers for Grade C (Group B Non-Gazetted, Pay Level 6) and Grade D (Group C, Pay Level 4) positions in various central government ministries, departments, and subordinate offices across India.

The selection process has two stages: a Computer-Based Test (CBT) and a Shorthand Skill Test. The CBT covers General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and English Language & Comprehension. Candidates who qualify the CBT are called for the Skill Test, which is purely qualifying.

7Skill Test – Shorthand (Qualifying)

The Shorthand Skill Test is the defining stage that separates SSC Steno from other SSC exams. It is purely qualifying — passing it is mandatory to get on the final merit list, but its marks are not added to the CBT score.

⚠️ What happens if you fail the Skill Test?

Failing the Skill Test means disqualification — even if your CBT rank is among the top candidates. There is no second attempt within the same cycle. You must appear in the next cycle.

✅ How to pass the Skill Test?

Keep your transcription error rate below ~5% of total words. Accuracy matters more than just speed. Practice 2 hours of shorthand daily for at least 4–5 months before the exam.

12Expert Tips for SSC Stenographer 2026

1
English is the game-changer

With 100 marks out of 200 in the CBT, English single-handedly determines your rank. Invest at least 50% of your study time here — grammar, vocab, and comprehension.

2
Start shorthand on Day 1

Candidates who delay shorthand practice almost always fail the Skill Test. Start basic speed drills from Month 1 itself — reach 80/100 wpm takes months of consistent practice.

3
Grade D is a genuine stepping stone

Grade D is Group C with Level 4 pay. After joining, in-service promotions to Grade C (Level 6) happen within 4–6 years. Many officers started as Grade D.

4
English medium vs Hindi medium

English Steno (Pitman system) has more practice material available online. Hindi Steno (Kaithi forms) has fewer resources — if you choose Hindi, source official SSC Steno Hindi guides.

5
Solve minimum 20 previous papers

SSC Steno CBT has a predictable pattern. English comprehension and reasoning are high-scoring. GA is scoring if you revise the last 6 months of current affairs.

6
Accuracy over speed in Skill Test

Many candidates reach the speed target but fail on transcription accuracy. Practice error-free transcription as much as speed. Below 5% error rate is your goal.
