1BARC OCES 2026 Overview
BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) is India's premier nuclear research institution under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. Every year it selects talented engineering and science graduates through the OCES (Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates) and DGFS (DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme) programmes.
Candidates selected through OCES undergo a rigorous 1-year residential training at BARC Training Schools in Mumbai (Trombay) or Hyderabad (AMD). On successful completion, they are permanently appointed as Scientific Officer "C" (Group-A) in DAE units including BARC, IGCAR, NPCIL, RRCAT, and others.

⚠️ Planning for OCES/DGFS-2027? BARC has not announced the 2027 notification yet. Going by the 2026 cycle (advertisement 22 December 2025, registration until 21 January 2026, CBT in March), expect a similar December–January window — treat that as a pattern, not a date. Meanwhile, sit for GATE in your discipline: a valid GATE score is a full alternative screening route, and BARC accepts scores from the three most recent GATE years.
3Eligibility Criteria 2026
📚 Educational Qualification
Engineering Stream
B.E. / B.Tech. / B.Sc. (Engineering) / 5-year Integrated M.Tech. with minimum 60% aggregate marks (or 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale) in one of the eight screening disciplines: Mechanical (21), Chemical (22), Metallurgical (23), Electrical (24), Electronics (25), Computer Science (26), Instrumentation (27) and Civil (28). Only regular full-time on-campus degrees qualify — correspondence, distance learning, part-time and degrees by research are not eligible.
Science Stream
M.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. — a plain B.Sc. on its own does not qualify — with minimum 60% aggregate marks (or 6.0 CGPA) across five screening disciplines: Physics (41), Chemistry (42), Biosciences (43), Geology (45) and Geophysics (46). Except for 5-year integrated degrees, you also need 60% at B.Sc. level. Each discipline carries its own subject-combination rules — Physics, for instance, requires Physics and Mathematics up to B.Sc. B.E./B.Tech in Engineering Physics is accepted for the Physics discipline, and B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Tech) in Food Technology for Biosciences.

Aerospace, Automobile, Automotive, Aeronautical, Mechanical & Automation, Industrial Production, Manufacturing, Mining, Marine, Architecture, Information Technology, Bio-Medical, MCA, Mechatronics, Textile, Plastics, Paper, Power, Software, Energy, Environmental Science, Structural, Biotechnology and Biochemical Engineering are NOT eligible. Hybrid degrees combining two major disciplines are also excluded. On the science side, M.Sc. in Nanoscience, Medical Physics, Astronomy, Industrial / Applied / Environmental Chemistry, Fisheries, Horticulture, Forestry, Marine Biology and Virology do not qualify. 💰 Application fee: a non-refundable fee of ₹500 is chargeable only from male applicants in the General and OBC categories. Fully exempt: women candidates, transgender candidates, SC/ST candidates, Dependents of Defence Personnel Killed in Action (DODPKIA), and physically challenged candidates with 40% or more disability. Candidates who avail the exemption must carry valid proof for verification at the exam centre.
♿ Disability & final-year provisions: Candidates with 40% or more disability get the 10-year age relaxation and may be permitted a scribe. Final-year students may also apply — but all academic requirements for the qualifying degree must be completed before 31 July 2026, and OCES TSOs must submit the final marksheet by 31 December 2026. The stipend is released only after those certificates are submitted.
4OCES vs DGFS – Which Programme is Right for You?
BARC runs two training programmes, but they are not two parallel applications. You apply once, for a single OCES screening discipline. DGFS is a follow-on route: only candidates who excel in the OCES selection interview and independently secure M.Tech admission at a listed DGFS institute in the same academic year are considered for it, and fellowships go to the most meritorious as per DAE's requirements. 💡 Tip: If you are an engineering graduate, sit the GATE and apply for IIT Bombay / IIT Madras M.Tech admission in the same year you attempt OCES. That is the only way the DGFS door stays open — an M.Tech from an IIT on top of a Group-A government job is an exceptional combination, but securing the IIT admission is entirely on you. Note that admission alone does not guarantee a fellowship: DAE awards DGFS on interview merit and its own programme needs.
5BARC OCES Exam Pattern 2026
Candidates have two routes to qualify the screening stage — the BARC Online Examination (CBT) or a valid GATE 2024/2025/2026 score. Using both is permitted and recommended. The final selection depends entirely on interview performance.

⚠️ Three things candidates get wrong: (1) You may apply for only one OCES screening discipline, even if your degree makes you eligible for two — an Electrical B.Tech, for example, can sit either Electrical (24) or Electronics (25), but must pick one. (2) Opting only for GATE means you will not be allotted a CBT slot at all — choose both routes to maximise your chances. (3) The CBT tests only your core technical subject: there is no General English, General Knowledge or Aptitude section.
🚆 Interview travel is reimbursed: Outstation candidates called for the selection interview are paid two-way AC-III tier train fare from their registered address by the shortest route (or actual fare, whichever is lower). Interviews are held at BARC Training School, Mumbai for every discipline except Geology and Geophysics, which are interviewed at Hyderabad. Travel allowance is not paid for the online CBT.

Medical Examination
Pre-employment medical test at the hospital of the concerned DAE unit. The stipend is released only after a DAE doctor certifies fitness. OCES-2026 training commenced on 31 July 2026.

7BARC Scientific Officer Salary 2026 – Full Pay Structure
💡 Why you see two different salary figures — and both are official. BARC published the OCES/DGFS-2026 recruitment in two documents, and each quotes a slightly different monthly total for a Mumbai posting:
- The Information Brochure states that monthly emoluments with three increments, including DA, HRA and Transport Allowance at the present Mumbai rate, will be approximately ₹1,34,000.
- The Employment News advertisement states that total monthly emoluments with a maximum of three increments, including the same three allowances, will be approximately ₹1,35,000 for those posted in Mumbai.
The ₹1,000 gap is simply rounding between two drafts of the same figure — so treat ₹1.34–1.35 lakh as the honest range rather than a precise promise. Both numbers are explicitly labelled “approximately” by BARC. Much lower figures such as ₹85,000–₹95,000 that still circulate online come from older brochures written when the stipend was ₹54,000 and DA was far lower — ignore them.

OCES TSOs receive two or three increments depending on their performance in the OCES programme; DGFS fellows receive three or four depending on their M.Tech and OCDF performance. Worked at a Mumbai (X-class) posting on a basic of ₹61,300 — the three-increment case the brochure quotes. Use it to understand the structure; your own figure will vary with posting city and increments:

This breakdown is indicative — BARC's own figure of approximately ₹1.34–1.35 lakh is the authoritative one, and the small gap is accounted for by PRIS and other allowances that vary by unit and performance. HRA moved to 30/20/10% for X/Y/Z cities once DA crossed 50%. A Y-class posting — Indore for RRCAT, or Kalpakkam for IGCAR — lands noticeably lower than the Mumbai figure, mainly through HRA and transport allowance.
📅 Which DA rate applies right now? Every figure on this page uses DA at 60% of basic pay, effective 1 January 2026 — approved by the Union Cabinet on 18 April 2026 and notified by the Ministry of Finance shortly after. Central DA is revised twice a year, on 1 January and 1 July. The 1 July 2026 instalment had not been announced as of 31 July 2026; the Cabinet normally clears the July revision around September–October, with arrears paid from 1 July. When that happens, every rupee figure below rises proportionally, because DA, and the DA component of Transport Allowance, are both calculated on basic pay.

Basic pay only — DA, HRA, Transport Allowance and PRIS sit on top of every figure. Promotions are merit-based, not time-bound, so there is no fixed number of years between grades. A Scientific Officer E on the first cell of Level 12, for example, draws ₹78,800 basic, which at 60% DA and Mumbai HRA works out to well over ₹1.8 lakh a month before PRIS.
