1BARC OCES 2026 Overview
BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) is India's premier nuclear research institution under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. Every year it selects talented engineering and science graduates through the OCES (Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates) and DGFS (DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme) programmes.
Candidates selected through OCES undergo a rigorous 1-year residential training at BARC Training Schools in Mumbai (Trombay) or Hyderabad (AMD). On successful completion, they are permanently appointed as Scientific Officer "C" (Group-A) in DAE units including BARC, IGCAR, NPCIL, RRCAT, and others.

4OCES vs DGFS – Which Programme is Right for You?
BARC offers two parallel training programmes. You can apply for both simultaneously — BARC will consider the better of your two scores. Here is a side-by-side comparison to help you decide:
| Parameter | OCES 2026 | DGFS 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Full Form | Orientation Course for Engg Graduates & Sci. PGs | DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme |
| Duration | 1 year | 2 years (M.Tech) |
| Training Venue | BARC Mumbai or AMD Hyderabad | IIT Bombay / IIT Madras / other DGFS institutes |
| Monthly Stipend | ₹74,000/month | ₹74,000/month |
| Extra Benefit | ₹30,000 book allowance (one-time) | Full M.Tech tuition + ₹60,000/yr contingency grant + up to ₹4 lakh project funding |
| Starts | 31 July 2026 | July 2026 |
| Post Completion | Scientific Officer "C" in DAE | Scientific Officer "C" in BARC or IGCAR |
| Who Should Apply | All eligible candidates | Engineering graduates only (9 disciplines) |
💡 Tip: Apply for both OCES and DGFS if you are eligible. BARC evaluates your best score. The DGFS route provides an M.Tech degree from a premier institute (IIT) on top of a government job — an exceptional combination.
5BARC OCES Exam Pattern 2026
Candidates have two routes to qualify the screening stage — the BARC Online Examination (CBT) or a valid GATE 2024/2025/2026 score. Using both is permitted and recommended. The final selection depends entirely on interview performance.
📝 Route A: BARC CBT Exam
🎯 Route B: GATE Score
🏆 Selection Process (3 Stages)
Screening
BARC CBT (100 MCQs, 2 hrs) OR valid GATE 2024/2025/2026 score. Both routes can be attempted.
Personal Interview
Only shortlisted candidates are called. Interview covers technical knowledge, problem-solving, and suitability for nuclear R&D. Final selection is based primarily on this stage.
Medical Examination
Medically fit candidates are issued joining letters. OCES training commences July 31, 2026.
6BARC OCES Syllabus 2026 – Branch-Wise
The BARC CBT syllabus is GATE-aligned for each discipline. Core technical subjects from your engineering/science branch form the backbone of the exam. Below are key topics by discipline:
Electrical Engineering (EE)
Mechanical Engineering (ME)
Computer Science (CS)
Chemical Engineering (CH)
Electronics & Communication (EC)
Civil Engineering (CE)
Physics (Science Stream)
⚠️ Detailed topic-wise syllabus is available in the official BARC OCES 2026 notification PDF on barcocesexam.in. The CBT follows GATE-level difficulty.

11Expert Preparation Tips
Prepare for GATE and BARC simultaneously. The BARC CBT syllabus mirrors GATE — a single focused preparation covers both exams and doubles your shortlisting chances.
Prioritise negative marking discipline. With −1 per wrong answer, do NOT guess randomly. Skip questions you are unsure about and return to them with remaining time.
Solve 10 years of BARC OCES previous papers. BARC repeats concept patterns. You will notice frequently tested topics — give them 60–70% of your preparation time.
Upload a strong GATE score if you have one. A high GATE percentile (top 3–5%) often directly qualifies you for the interview round without sitting the BARC CBT.
Prepare seriously for the personal interview — it is the only selection criterion. Study nuclear energy basics, India's atomic energy programme, DAE organisational structure, and recent BARC research publications before your interview date.
