810-Month Study Plan for BARC OCES

BARC OCES preparation runs parallel to GATE preparation — master your core engineering subjects thoroughly. This plan suits candidates aiming for both GATE and BARC OCES simultaneously.

Month 1–2

Build Core Technical Foundation

Revise fundamental subjects of your discipline — Maths, Circuits/Mechanics/Reactions. Solve 30 previous-year GATE questions daily. Understand the exam pattern deeply.

Month 3–4

Deep-Dive Subject Chapters

Cover 2–3 core subjects in detail. Use standard textbooks relevant to your branch. Attempt subject-wise mock tests and identify weak areas.

Month 5–6

Complete Syllabus + GATE Mock Tests

Finish all syllabus chapters. Start full-length GATE mock tests (3 per week). Review errors meticulously. Strengthen Numerical Ability questions.

Month 7–8

BARC CBT Practice + Revision

Shift to BARC-style 100 MCQ mock tests (3 marks, -1 penalty). Practice negative marking discipline. Revise all formulae and key derivations.

Month 9–10

Interview Preparation

Study nuclear energy basics, BARC's research areas, and India's atomic energy programme. Practise HR questions. Mock interviews with peers or mentors.

9Best Books for BARC OCES 2026

Use standard undergraduate textbooks for your discipline. Since the CBT is GATE-aligned, GATE preparation books and previous-year papers are the best resource alongside these references:

11Expert Preparation Tips

1

Prepare for GATE and BARC simultaneously. The BARC CBT syllabus mirrors GATE — a single focused preparation covers both exams and doubles your shortlisting chances.

2

Prioritise negative marking discipline. With −1 per wrong answer, do NOT guess randomly. Skip questions you are unsure about and return to them with remaining time.

3

Solve 10 years of BARC OCES previous papers. BARC repeats concept patterns. You will notice frequently tested topics — give them 60–70% of your preparation time.

4

Upload a strong GATE score if you have one. A high GATE percentile (top 3–5%) often directly qualifies you for the interview round without sitting the BARC CBT.

5

Prepare seriously for the personal interview — it is the only selection criterion. Study nuclear energy basics, India's atomic energy programme, DAE organisational structure, and recent BARC research publications before your interview date.
