AFCAT 2026 – Complete
Guide to Air Force Officer Entry
AFCAT 2 2026 expected in August 2026. Entry into the Indian Air Force as a commissioned officer in Flying, Technical & Ground Duty branches. Graduate eligible, age 20–26 years (20–24 for Flying). Gross salary ~₹1,20,000–₹1,35,000/month (Flying Officer, metro posting).
What is AFCAT 2026?
The Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) twice a year to recruit Commissioned Officers in Flying, Technical, and Ground Duty branches. Administered online by CDAC on behalf of IAF, AFCAT is one of India's most prestigious defence examinations.
Successful candidates are granted a Permanent Commission (PC) or Short Service Commission (SSC) depending on branch and gender. Flying Branch officers serve a minimum of 14 years (SSC) while Technical and Ground Duty officers have both PC and SSC options available. All selected officers undergo rigorous training at Air Force Academy, Dundigal, Hyderabad.
What makes AFCAT unique among defence exams is its biannual frequency — giving aspirants two opportunities per year — and the EKT (Engineering Knowledge Test) for Technical Branch that tests domain expertise alongside the common aptitude paper.

🎯 AFSB Interview Process (Stage 2)
The Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) interview is a 5-day residential assessment held at one of four boards: Mysore (No. 1), Varanasi (No. 2), Gandhinagar (No. 3), or Dehradun (No. 4). Qualifying AFCAT earns you an AFSB call letter — but the AFSB is where the real selection happens.
Screening Tests
Stage 1 (Day 1)Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test – a paper-based intelligence test. Followed by Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT) – candidates write a story based on an image and discuss it in a group. Only qualified candidates proceed to Stage 2.
Psychological Tests
Stage 2 (Day 2–4)Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT), and Self Description Test (SD). Assesses personality, mental adaptability, and suitability for a commissioned officer role.
Group Testing Officers (GTO) Tasks
Stage 2 (Day 2–4)Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise (GPE), Progressive Group Task (PGT), Group Obstacle Race, Half Group Task (HGT), Individual Obstacles, Command Task, Final Group Task (FGT), Lecturette.
Personal Interview
Stage 2 (Day 4–5)In-depth interview by an Interviewing Officer (IO) based on your filled PIQ form. Tests leadership potential, motivation for joining IAF, general awareness, and personality. Typically 45–90 minutes.
Conference
Stage 2 (Day 5)All assessors (Psychologist, GTO, IO, and President AFSB) collectively review your performance. A final recommendation is made. Result announced on the same day — Recommended / Not Recommended.
Medical Examination
Post AFSBRecommended candidates undergo a thorough Medical Examination at Air Force Medical Centres. Flying Branch candidates have the most stringent medical criteria including specific visual standards (6/6 uncorrected for pilots).
✅ Officer Like Qualities (OLQs): IAF assessors evaluate 15 OLQs including Effective Intelligence, Reasoning Ability, Organising Ability, Power of Expression, Social Adaptability, Cooperation, Sense of Responsibility, Initiative, Self-Confidence, Speed of Decision, Ability to Influence the Group, Liveliness, Determination, Courage, and Stamina. All tests (Psych, GTO, Interview) collectively assess these qualities.

Expert Tips to Crack AFCAT 2026
The OIR + PPDT screening eliminates 50–70% of candidates on Day 1 itself. Practice mental ability tests timed and practise storytelling with a structured narrative (character, conflict, resolution) for PPDT.
AFCAT GA is heavily loaded with IAF/Defence current affairs. Follow the official IAF social handles and read one national newspaper daily. Maintain a monthly diary of key events, missile tests, inductions, and exercise names.
AFCAT is 100 questions in 120 minutes = 72 seconds per question. Do General Awareness and English first (quick marks), then Reasoning, and tackle Numerical last. Never spend more than 90 seconds on any single question.
Each wrong answer costs 1 mark (3 marks awarded per correct answer). Attempting a question where you have no clue statistically hurts your score. Skip if you cannot eliminate at least 2 options confidently.
The AFSB is not something you can cram 2 weeks before. Read about Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), practise GT tasks concepts, read leadership books, and stay physically fit. IAF looks for well-rounded personalities.
While there is no PFT at the AFCAT stage, AFSB has an outdoor GTO day with physical tasks. More importantly, joining training at Dundigal is physically demanding. Build a daily PT/running habit from preparation day 1.

What is the age limit for AFCAT 2026?
For Flying Branch: 20–24 years as on the date of commencement of the course. For Technical Branch and Ground Duty (Non-Technical) Branch: 20–26 years. Age relaxations as per Government norms for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates may apply — check the official AFCAT notification.
What is the AFCAT salary in 2026?
A Flying Officer (entry level) receives Level 10 basic pay of ₹56,100/month plus Military Service Pay (MSP) of ₹15,500/month. With DA (55% as of 2026), HRA, Transport Allowance, and Flying Allowance (for Flying Branch), the total gross in-hand in a metro posting is approximately ₹1,20,000–₹1,35,000/month. Rank increases come with significant salary jumps.
What is AFSB Interview and how should I prepare?
AFSB (Air Force Selection Board) is a 5-day residential assessment at one of four boards (Mysore, Varanasi, Gandhinagar, Dehradun). It has two stages: Stage 1 (OIR + PPDT screening, Day 1) and Stage 2 (Psychological tests, GTO tasks, Personal Interview, Conference). Prepare by practising PPDT stories, improving group discussion skills, reading about IAF history/operations, and building leadership qualities. Physical fitness is assessed indirectly through GTO outdoor tasks.
Can women apply for AFCAT Flying Branch?
Yes. Women are eligible for the Flying Branch (Fighter, Transport & Helicopter streams) as well as Technical and Ground Duty branches. Fighter stream is now open to women — there are serving women fighter pilots in the IAF. The physical and medical standards for women pilots are the same as men except for height and some specific medical criteria defined in the AFCAT notification.
What is EKT and who needs to appear for it?
EKT stands for Engineering Knowledge Test. It is mandatory for candidates applying for the Technical Branch (both Mechanical and Electronics & Communication streams). EKT consists of 45 questions (150 marks) in 45 minutes based on the candidate's engineering specialisation. AFCAT and EKT are conducted on the same day — first AFCAT (2 hours), then EKT (45 minutes). You need to qualify both independently for Technical Branch selection.
