1. What is SSC JE 2026?
SSC JE 2026 Notification Expected: June–July 2026
The 2024 cycle is complete — final result and joining are underway. The 2026 cycle notification is expected June–July 2026. Paper I (CBT) is likely in October–November 2026. Start preparing now — competition is intense with over 5–8 lakh applicants per cycle.
SSC JE (Junior Engineer) is an annual national-level examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) to recruit Junior Engineers in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering streams for central government departments including CPWD, CWC, MES, BRO, Farakka Barrage Project Authority, and others.
SSC JE is one of the most sought-after engineering recruitment exams in India because it offers a Pay Level 6 government job (₹35,400 basic pay) to Diploma holders — making it accessible to candidates who have not completed a full B.E./B.Tech degree. The exam has two stages: Paper I (Computer Based Test) and Paper II (Conventional/Descriptive).
The three branches — Civil & Structural, Electrical, and Mechanical — are conducted separately, and candidates must choose their branch at the application stage. CPWD and MES are the most preferred departments, offering diverse project exposure and faster promotions.

3. 🎓 Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
Must hold a Diploma in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical) or a Degree in Engineering / Technology (B.E. / B.Tech) in the relevant discipline from a recognised institution.
Age Limit
Nationality
Must be a citizen of India. Subjects of Nepal/Bhutan and Tibetan refugees settled before 1 January 1962 may also be eligible per Government of India norms. Candidates of Indian origin settled abroad are also eligible in certain cases.
Number of Attempts
SSC JE has no restriction on the number of attempts — you can appear in every cycle as long as you meet the age limit. This is a significant advantage over exams like UPSC or State PSCs, which cap total attempts.

⚠️ Department-wise vacancy breakdowns vary cycle to cycle. The 2026 cycle detailed allocation will be available in the official notification on ssc.gov.in.
5. 🗂️ Selection Process
SSC JE selection is a two-paper process — Paper I is the filter, Paper II is the decider. There is no interview.
Paper I – Computer Based Test (CBT)
200 marks | 2 hours | Objective MCQ. Covers General Intelligence & Reasoning (50 marks), General Awareness (50 marks), and General Engineering Part A/B/C (100 marks) as per your branch. Qualifying in nature — shortlists candidates for Paper II.
Paper II – Conventional (Descriptive)
300 marks | 2 hours | Pen-and-paper descriptive exam. In-depth engineering topics for your chosen branch (Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical). This is the merit-determining paper — your final rank is based on Paper II score (Paper I marks are not counted in the merit list).
Document Verification (DV)
Shortlisted candidates from Paper II are called for Document Verification. Original certificates for educational qualification, age proof, category certificate (if applicable), and other documents are verified. No additional exam or interview.
Medical Examination
Standard government medical fitness examination. Candidates must meet the basic physical and visual fitness standards. Requirements may vary slightly by department (e.g., MES has specific standards for field roles).
6. 📋 Exam Pattern
Paper I – Computer Based Test
| Section | Questions | Marks | Negative |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 50 | 50 | −0.25/wrong |
| General Awareness | 50 | 50 | −0.25/wrong |
| Part A: General Engineering (Civil & Structural) | 100 | 100 | −0.25/wrong |
| TOTAL | 200 | 200 | −0.25 each |
Paper II – Conventional (Descriptive)
| Paper | Marks | Duration | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part A – Civil & Structural Engineering | 300 | 2 hours | For Civil Branch candidates |
| Part B – Electrical Engineering | 300 | 2 hours | For Electrical Branch candidates |
| Part C – Mechanical Engineering | 300 | 2 hours | For Mechanical Branch candidates |
Paper II is the merit-determining stage. Final selection rank is based solely on Paper II marks. Higher Paper II score = better department preference.

11. 💡 Expert Tips to Crack SSC JE 2026
Paper I = 200 marks, Paper II = 300 marks — don't ignore Paper II
Most candidates over-prepare for Paper I (MCQ) and underestimate Paper II (descriptive). Yet Paper II carries 300 marks and determines final rank. Allocate at least 40% of your total study time to Paper II preparation, especially descriptive problem-solving.
Choose your branch carefully — you cannot change it
SSC JE asks you to choose your engineering branch (Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical) at the application stage. This determines the Paper I Part A/B/C you take and the Paper II you write. Choose the branch where you hold your Diploma/Degree and are most confident.
Previous year papers are gold — solve all papers from 2010 to 2024
SSC JE has a strong repetition pattern, especially in General Engineering. Topics like Fluid Mechanics, Transformers, Theory of Machines, and Soil Mechanics repeat in almost every cycle. Solving last 10 years of papers will give you 60–70% of the expected Paper I questions.
Use GATE standard books for Paper II — SSC JE books alone are not enough
For Paper II (conventional/descriptive), SSC-specific books won't cut it. Use standard engineering textbooks (R.K. Bansal, B.L. Theraja, R.S. Khurmi) combined with GATE-level numerical practice. IS codes are especially important for Civil candidates in design problems.
GA is free marks — don't miss them
General Awareness (50 marks) is the easiest section to score in, yet many engineering students neglect it. Daily 20-minute current affairs reading + Lucent GK revision can reliably fetch you 35–45/50. This can be the deciding margin in a competitive exam.
Apply to multiple departments — CPWD, CWC, MES all have different work cultures
SSC JE vacancies span CPWD, CWC, MES, BRO, FARAKKA Barrage, and more. CPWD and MES are considered the best postings for growth. All are Pay Level 6. You don't choose the department — SSC allocates based on merit and preference order. Research each department before listing preferences.
