💡11. Expert Preparation Tips for RRB JE

1
CBT 1 is qualifying — not merit-deciding: Your final rank is determined entirely by CBT 2. CBT 1 is just a screening test to shortlist roughly 15× the number of vacancies. Clear it comfortably, then pour your energy into CBT 2 technical preparation.
2
Technical section = 67% of CBT 2 marks: CBT 2 has 150 questions — 100 are from your engineering branch. This is where toppers are separated from the rest. Go deep into your branch syllabus. Previous year papers from GATE and SSC JE are excellent practice material.
3
Know your RRB zone before applying: India has 21 RRB zones. You can only apply to one zone per notification. Your posting will typically be in that zone's region. Check vacancy distribution zone-wise before applying to maximise your chances.
4
General Science > current affairs in CBT 1: In CBT 1, General Science carries 30 marks — the same as Mathematics. Many candidates underestimate it. Cover Physics, Chemistry, and Biology up to Class 10 NCERT level thoroughly; it is very scorable.
5
Physical fitness matters — medical exam is strict: RRB JE includes a Medical Examination after document verification. Vision standards, colour blindness tests, and general fitness are checked. Candidates with certain colour vision defects may be ineligible for some posts. Read the notification medical requirements carefully.
6
Previous year papers are your best friend: RRB JE has been conducted multiple times — 2015, 2019, 2024. Analysing PYQs reveals repeated question patterns, especially in Technical Abilities. Solve at least 5 years of papers for your branch before appearing for CBT 2.

12. Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an interview for RRB JE?

No. RRB JE has no interview round. Selection is based entirely on CBT 1 (qualifying), CBT 2 (merit-based), document verification, and medical examination. The final merit list is based on CBT 2 marks, which includes your technical branch subjects and general subjects.

What is the difference between CBT 1 and CBT 2 in RRB JE?

CBT 1 (100 questions / 100 marks / 90 min) tests general subjects: Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and General Science. It is qualifying only and not counted in the merit. CBT 2 (150 questions / 150 marks / 120 min) tests your engineering branch (100 marks) plus General Awareness, Physics & Chemistry, Computer Basics, and Environment (50 marks). CBT 2 determines your final rank.
