It is already out. TNPSC published Notification No. 07/2026 (Advertisement No. 740) on 11 August 2026 for 821 posts — 41 in Group II Services and 780 in Group IIA Services. Online applications close on 9 September 2026 at 11.59 PM, with a correction window from 13 to 15 September 2026, and the preliminary examination is on 1 November 2026 from 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM. Apply through tnpscexams.in after completing your One Time Registration (₹150, valid five years).

Both come under the same combined notification and sit the same common Preliminary Examination, but their Main Examinations differ. Neither has an interview. For Group II Services, Main Paper II is a descriptive General Studies paper of 300 marks held at the Chennai centre only. For Group IIA Services, Main Paper II is an objective Computer Based Test of 300 marks combining General Studies (150 questions) and General Intelligence & Reasoning (50 questions), held across 38 centres. Both streams also write the same qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test as Paper I. If you are selected for a Group II post you will not be considered for a Group IIA post in the same cycle.

The minimum educational qualification for TNPSC Group 2 and Group 2A is a Bachelor's degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a recognised university. For a few specific posts like Personal Assistant, typing proficiency in Tamil and English may also be required. 12th pass candidates are not eligible.

Age is reckoned as on 1 July 2026. The minimum is 18 years for most posts (22 for Probation Officer, 20 for Sub Registrar Grade-II, 25 for Executive Officer Grade III). For “Others” — candidates not covered by Tamil Nadu communal reservation — the maximum is 32 years. TNPSC is unusual among state commissions in that candidates belonging to SCs, SC(A)s, STs, MBCs/DCs, BCs (other than Muslim), BCs (Muslim) and Destitute Widows of all categories have NO maximum age limit, rather than a fixed number of extra years; in practice this means not having completed 60 years. Persons with Benchmark Disability may go up to 42 years and ex-servicemen up to 50, though ex-servicemen already recruited to a service cannot claim the concession. Note also that Others who have already completed five years or more of Central or State Government service are not eligible even if within the age limit.

The Preliminary exam is offline and OMR-based, with 200 objective questions carrying 300 marks, to be completed in 3 hours on 1 November 2026. It consists of General Tamil or General English (100 questions, SSLC standard), General Studies (75 questions, degree standard), and Aptitude & Mental Ability (25 questions, SSLC standard). The qualifying mark is 90 for all communities alike. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, but under the 2026 notification 0.5 mark is deducted for every question left blank — each question paper carries an option [E] which you should darken if you do not know the answer. A further 0.5 mark is deducted if you do not affix your left hand thumb impression. The prelims is only a screening test; these marks are not counted in the final merit.

Salary varies by post. Pay is fixed under the Tamil Nadu Revised Pay Rules, 2017, with each post assigned its own level in the state pay matrix. Notification 07/2026 places the posts between Level 9 and Level 18 — Group II posts sit at Levels 16 and 18, while Group IIA posts run from Level 9 to Level 12. Basic pay starts at about ₹37,200/month and the overall range runs to roughly ₹1,17,600/month. With DA, HRA, medical benefits and other allowances the approximate gross is ₹55,000–₹70,000/month depending on the post and posting city; in-hand pay is lower after NPS and other deductions.
