1. What is TNPSC Group 2 2026?

TNPSC Group 2 & Group 2A is a combined recruitment examination conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) for filling vacancies in Tamil Nadu State Government services. It is one of the most sought-after state government exams in Tamil Nadu, offering positions ranging from Sub-Registrar and Municipal Commissioner (Group 2 – Interview posts) to Revenue Officer and Personal Assistant (Group 2A – Non-Interview posts).

The latest notification was released on 28 October 2024 for approximately 1,979 posts across multiple departments. The selection process for Group 2 posts has three stages: Preliminary Exam → Main Exam → Interview/Oral Test. For Group 2A posts, there are only two stages: Preliminary Exam → Main Exam (no interview).

The exam is conducted in Tamil and English — candidates can choose their medium. The preliminary exam is a Computer Based Test (CBT) of 200 questions (300 marks, 3 hours). There is negative marking of 1/3 for every wrong answer in both Prelims and Mains. Prelims marks are used only for shortlisting — they are not added to the final merit.

💡 Key Update for 2026: The 2024–25 combined notification (October 2024) covers ~1,979 posts across Group 2 and Group 2A. TNPSC shifted to Computer Based Testing (CBT) for Prelims from the 2022–23 cycle onwards. Main exam is still pen-and-paper (OMR/descriptive as applicable). Always verify the latest status at tnpsc.gov.in.

11. Expert Tips for TNPSC Group 2 2026

1
Tamil Nadu GK is a dealbreaker

A significant portion of the TNPSC exam is TN-specific. Questions on TN history, rivers, districts, industries, culture, and schemes are very frequent. Dedicated Tamil Nadu GK preparation can make you outperform candidates who only study general topics.

2
Understand Group 2 vs Group 2A difference

Group 2 posts have an interview (oral test) worth 40 marks, while Group 2A posts are non-interview. Both require the same Prelims and Mains exams. Apply for both simultaneously — the combined notification covers all posts together.

3
AMAB section is fully scorable

The Aptitude & Mental Ability (AMAB) section has 25 questions in prelims and is very formula-based. Most questions come from standard topics: time-work, percentages, number series, and logical reasoning. Scoring 23–25/25 is achievable with just 4–6 weeks of focused practice.

4
One-year current affairs is enough

TNPSC current affairs focuses on the 12 months before the exam. Don't study current affairs from 3 years ago — it's not asked. Read The Hindu or a monthly current affairs magazine and focus on national + Tamil Nadu specific events.

5
Negative marking applies — be selective

The prelims has negative marking of 1/3 mark for each wrong answer. Never guess blindly. If you can eliminate 2 options out of 4, attempting it is mathematically profitable. If you can't eliminate any, skip the question.
