1What is TNPSC Group 1 2026?

The TNPSC Group 1 exam (officially: Combined Civil Services Examination – I) is conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission to recruit candidates for the highest-ranking posts in Tamil Nadu state services. Often described as Tamil Nadu's equivalent of the UPSC Civil Services, this exam opens doors to coveted posts such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), District Registrar, and Assistant Commissioner.

The examination follows a three-tier structure — Prelims (qualifying), Mains (descriptive, merit-based), and Interview — closely mirroring the UPSC pattern. Final selection is based entirely on Mains (750 marks) + Interview (100 marks) = 850 total marks. Prelims marks are not added to the merit list.

TNPSC Group 1 is conducted approximately once a year and typically attracts over 2–4 lakh applicants for around 72–170 posts, making it one of the most competitive state-level exams in India.

11Expert Tips to Crack TNPSC Group 1 2026

1

Tamil Nadu GK is non-negotiable

TNPSC Group 1 questions are heavily Tamil Nadu-centric. History, geography, economy, culture, government schemes and current affairs specific to TN consistently account for 25–30% of Prelims questions. Treat TN GK as a separate subject with dedicated daily study time.

2

No negative marking — attempt every question in Prelims

Unlike many central exams, TNPSC Group 1 Prelims has zero negative marking. Every unanswered question is a wasted opportunity. Even if you're uncertain, eliminate two options and attempt — you have nothing to lose. On a 300-mark paper, this strategy can net you an extra 5–15 marks.

3

Prelims marks don't matter — Mains is everything

Many candidates over-prepare for Prelims and neglect Mains writing skills. Remember: Prelims only qualifies you. Your final rank depends entirely on Mains (750 marks) + Interview (100 marks) = 850 marks. Start practising descriptive answers from Month 5 itself — don't wait until Prelims results.

4

Samacheer Kalvi textbooks are the secret weapon

TNPSC sets a significant number of questions from Tamil Nadu State Board (Samacheer Kalvi) textbooks, especially for Science, Social Science, and Tamil Nadu-specific topics. Thoroughly revising Samacheer Kalvi books for Classes 6–12 gives you an enormous edge that standard UPSC books cannot provide.

5

Tamil Paper I is qualifying — do not ignore it

Many engineers and English-medium candidates underestimate the Tamil Paper in Mains. Scoring below 40/100 means all three GS papers go unvalued regardless of how well you wrote them. Allocate at least 1 hour daily to Tamil language practice for the entire preparation period.
