What is UPSC EPFO 2026?

The UPSC EPFO exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit officers for the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. It fills two prestigious posts: Enforcement Officer/Accounts Officer (EO/AO) and Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC).

EPFO is one of the world's largest social security organisations, managing provident fund, pension, and insurance schemes for over 6 crore active members. Officers posted here play a direct role in protecting the retirement savings of India's working population.

The exam is held irregularly (roughly every 2–3 years) and attracts lakhs of aspirants due to its Group A & B Gazetted status, attractive salary, and central government job security. Since 2023, a single combined exam covers both EO/AO and APFC posts.

Expert Preparation Tips for UPSC EPFO

01

Labour Laws first, everything else second. Allocate at least 35–40% of your study time to Labour Laws. It separates toppers from the rest in every EPFO cycle.

02

Read the bare acts, not just summaries. For EPF Act 1952 and ESI Act 1948, knowing the exact section numbers and provisions is tested directly in UPSC EPFO. Summaries miss critical nuances.

03

Negative marking is severe — 1/3rd per wrong answer. With 2.5 marks per question, one wrong answer costs you ~0.83 marks. Attempt 75–80 questions accurately rather than guessing all 120.

04

Current Affairs needs to cover the last 12 months. Unlike most exams that ask 6-month CA, UPSC EPFO has historically asked questions up to 1 year before the exam. Start a monthly capsule early.

05

The exam is bilingual — use Hindi if you are stronger in it. All questions (except General English Section A) are in both Hindi and English. Hindi-medium students should not hesitate to use their language advantage.

06

Study EPFO's own schemes. Questions from the exam often test your knowledge of EPF, EPS-95, EDLI scheme, and UAN system directly — knowledge that only comes from reading EPFO's official publications.

07

The interview has 25% weightage — do not ignore it. If shortlisted, read EPFO annual reports, recent Labour Ministry policy decisions, and ILO conventions. Panel focuses on awareness of social security themes.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the UPSC EPFO 2026 notification be released?
Based on RTI data, EPFO has sent a requisition to UPSC for 391 vacancies (311 EO/AO + 80 APFC). The official notification is expected in August–September 2026, with the Recruitment Test likely in December 2026. Always check upsc.gov.in for official updates.
What is the difference between EO/AO and APFC posts?
EO/AO (Enforcement Officer/Accounts Officer) is a Group B Gazetted post at Pay Level 8 (₹47,600 basic). APFC (Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner) is a Group A Gazetted post at Pay Level 10 (₹56,100 basic) with higher responsibility and salary. Both are recruited through the same exam.
Is there a separate exam for EO/AO and APFC in 2026?
No. Since 2023, UPSC has moved to a single combined Recruitment Test (RT) for both EO/AO and APFC posts. There is one paper of 120 MCQs (300 marks, 2 hours) for all candidates. The same exam score is used for merit lists of both posts.
What is the most important subject for UPSC EPFO?
Labour Laws & Social Security is the highest-weightage and most differentiating subject. Many candidates from non-law backgrounds score poorly here. Covering the EPF Act 1952, ESI Act 1948, Factories Act 1948, and the four new Labour Codes 2020 in detail is non-negotiable for cracking this exam.
Is UPSC EPFO better than IBPS PO or SSC CGL?
It depends on your preference. UPSC EPFO (EO/AO) offers a central government post with better job security and allowances. The salary (~₹85,000–₹91,000/month gross for EO/AO) is competitive. APFC is a Group A post — equivalent to UPSC IAS in terms of Central Service grade. The exam is harder than IBPS PO but is not as gruelling as UPSC CSE.
