116-Month Study Plan for CDS 2026

Month 1English Grammar Foundation

Revise grammar rules: tenses, articles, prepositions, voice, narration. Do 30 error-spotting and sentence-improvement drills daily. Start reading The Hindu or Indian Express every morning for 15 minutes. CDS English is tricky but very scorable with daily practice.

Month 2Mathematics Foundation

Revise NCERT Class 9–12 Maths: Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry. CDS Maths is Class 10–12 standard but questions are cleverly framed. Target 60–70% accuracy by Month 2 end. Solve previous year CDS Maths papers to understand the question style.

Month 3GK – History, Polity, Geography

Cover NCERT History (Class 6–12), Indian Polity by Laxmikanth, and NCERT Geography. These three form about 60% of GK. Make short notes for quick revision. Study 3–4 chapters daily and revise weekly.

Month 4GK – Science, Economy, Current Affairs

Physics, Chemistry, Biology from NCERT Class 8–10. Basic Economics and Budget highlights. Start a daily current affairs habit using free apps. Defence news and appointments are very frequently asked in CDS GK.

Month 5Full Mock Tests and Revision

Start full-length CDS mock tests. Target 2 mocks per week. Analyse wrong answers carefully — most mistakes are in GK and Maths. Revise weak areas. Build English vocabulary from previous year papers.

Month 6Final Revision and SSB Awareness

Revise all subjects using short notes. Daily practice for English and Maths. Start preparing for SSB: read about Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), watch SSB YouTube videos, practise WAT and TAT writing. Physical fitness: running, push-ups, pull-ups — start 6 months before SSB.

14Expert Tips for CDS 2026

📋

Negative marking is one-third mark per wrong answer. Never guess randomly. If you can eliminate two options, attempt — otherwise skip. Accuracy over attempts. Skipping a time-consuming Maths question and securing English and GK marks is often the smarter call.

📰

GK carries the highest weight and is the most dynamic section. CDS regularly asks about recent appointments (Chiefs of Army/Navy/Air Force), exercise names, missile tests, budget defence allocations, and India-centric geography. Build a 6-month daily reading habit.

🔢

CDS Maths is Class 10–12 level — not higher. But questions are cleverly designed. Solve the last 10 years of CDS Maths papers to spot repeated topics. Trigonometry, Mensuration, and Statistics carry the highest weight. Even 50–60 out of 100 adds significant marks.

🤝

SSB carries 300 marks vs 340 for the written exam (for IMA). A strong SSB score can compensate for an average written score. Develop genuine leadership, communication, and teamwork — not scripted answers. Interviewers see thousands of candidates and detect rehearsed responses instantly.

💪

Start physical fitness training from Day 1 of preparation. SSB does not have a formal PFT, but fitness influences stamina, confidence, and bearing during the 5-day process. Run 2–3 km daily, add push-ups and pull-ups. You want to arrive at SSB fit and sharp, not gasping.

🔁

CDS is held twice a year. If you miss CDS I, CDS II is only 6 months away. Many successful officers cleared CDS on their second or third attempt. Each attempt gives better understanding of the exam and SSB. Never let one NR (Not Recommended) at SSB discourage you.

🌐

For SSB interview, know your PIQ (Personal Information Questionnaire) deeply. Everything on your PIQ is fair game for the interviewer. They look for consistency between what you wrote and what you say. Be honest — never inflate or invent experiences.

📝

OTA aspirants only need English and GK — no Maths. This makes CDS more accessible for arts and commerce graduates. OTA Men also has a higher age ceiling of 25 years vs 24 for IMA/INA/AFA, giving an extra year of preparation time.
