1What is UPSC IFS 2026?
The Indian Forest Service (IFS), also written as IFoS, is one of India's three prestigious All India Services — alongside IAS and IPS. Conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the IFS examination recruits officers for managing India's forest resources, wildlife conservation, and ecological balance across all states and union territories.
Unlike the Civil Services Examination, the IFS is specifically designed for candidates with a science or engineering background. The Preliminary Examination is shared with UPSC CSE (conducted on 24 May 2026), but the Mains examination is entirely separate and focuses on technical science subjects through optional paper choices.
The 2026 notification announced 80 vacancies distributed across General, OBC, SC, ST, and EWS categories. IFS officers are posted across different cadres (state-wise) and are responsible for implementing forest laws, managing national parks, tiger reserves, and liaising with communities for sustainable forest management.
💡 2026 Key Update
UPSC IFS 2026 notification was originally scheduled for 14 January 2026 but was postponed due to administrative reasons. It was ultimately released on 4 February 2026 with 80 vacancies. Both IFS and CSE share the same Prelims on 24 May 2026 — candidates must apply separately via upsconline.nic.in.

9Study Plan (Prelims + Mains)
Since IFS Prelims is the same exam as UPSC CSE, prepare together. Cover NCERT books Classes 6–12 for History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, and Science. Environment & Ecology deserves extra focus for IFS — it carries high weightage. Target 40 quality questions daily with full analysis of errors.
Finalise your two optional subjects based on academic background — Forestry, Botany, Zoology, Agriculture, or Chemistry are popular among IFS aspirants. Begin one optional subject this month. Practice CSAT Paper II (qualifying) to be safe — target 100+ out of 200 with steady practice.
Complete Prelims revision: revise all NCERTs once. Complete Paper 1 of your first optional. Solve 10 years of IFS Prelims GS papers. Target 120–130 out of 200 in GS Paper 1 mocks. Do not underestimate Current Affairs — read monthly compilation PDFs for environment, biodiversity, forest policy.
Post-Prelims: start Mains immediately without waiting for results. Focus on General English (Paper I) — practice précis writing, essay writing, comprehension, and grammar daily. 500-word essays on environment, forests, biodiversity, climate change, and national policies carry huge weightage.
Both optional subjects (4 papers) carry 800 marks of the 1400-mark Mains. Answer writing is critical — practice minimum 5 structured answers daily per subject. Draw diagrams wherever possible (especially for Biology, Botany, Zoology). Previous year papers reveal repeat topics — identify and master them first.
GK Paper II (300 marks): covers Environment & Forest Policy, Wildlife Acts, Biodiversity Conventions, Climate Change Agreements, Economic Policies, Constitutional matters. Prepare forest-specific current affairs thoroughly. For the Interview: be well-versed in your home state forests, national parks, tiger reserves, environmental issues, and recent government schemes on green energy and climate.

12Expert Preparation Tips
IFS Prelims is the same exam as UPSC CSE Prelims — prepare them together. This is the biggest advantage: you get two shots at All India Services with a single Prelims preparation. But note that if you clear CSE Prelims, you must separately register for IFS Mains.
Choose your optional subjects strategically. Forestry is the most exam-specific but has fewer resources. Botany + Zoology, or Agriculture + Forestry are popular combinations with high scoring potential if your academic background matches.
The Mains exam is entirely in English (unlike UPSC CSE which allows Indian languages). Paper I – General English (300 marks) tests formal writing, précis, comprehension, and essay. Practise writing one 600-word essay daily from Month 5.
Environment & Ecology is the highest-weightage topic across both Prelims GS Paper I and Mains GK Paper II. SHANKAR IAS Environment notes and annual UPSC Environment supplement are the two must-read resources — cover them before anything else.
Know Indian forest laws and policies thoroughly: Indian Forest Act 1927, Wildlife Protection Act 1972, Forest Conservation Act 1980, Biological Diversity Act 2002, CAMPA, National Forest Policy 1988. These appear in every IFS Mains GK paper.
IFS Mains optional papers are at honours-degree level. If you're from a science/engineering background, match your optional to your B.Sc./B.Tech. subjects. Scoring 150+ out of 200 in each optional paper is achievable only with academic familiarity.
The Personality Test assesses your suitability as a field officer. Be prepared to discuss your home state's forests, national parks, tiger reserves, major environmental issues, and recent Supreme Court orders on forests. Read the forest annual report of your state.
Only 80 vacancies for 2026 — IFS is among the most selective All India Services. Clear Prelims cutoff first; the Mains score carries 82% of the final merit (1400 marks). One well-written optional answer can mean the difference of 10–15 rank positions.
