1What is UPSC IFS 2026?

The Indian Forest Service (IFS), also written as IFoS, is one of India's three prestigious All India Services — alongside IAS and IPS. Conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the IFS examination recruits officers for managing India's forest resources, wildlife conservation, and ecological balance across all states and union territories.

Unlike the Civil Services Examination, the IFS is specifically designed for candidates with a science or engineering background. The Preliminary Examination is shared with UPSC CSE (conducted on 24 May 2026), but the Mains examination is entirely separate and focuses on technical science subjects through optional paper choices.

The 2026 notification announced 80 vacancies distributed across General, OBC, SC, ST, and EWS categories. IFS officers are posted across different cadres (state-wise) and are responsible for implementing forest laws, managing national parks, tiger reserves, and liaising with communities for sustainable forest management.

Upload Documents & Photo

Upload a recent passport-size photo (JPEG, 20–300 KB) and sign three times on white paper with black ink — scan and upload as one file. Live photo capture is required during submission.

Pay the Application Fee

General/EWS/OBC male candidates: ₹100. Female / SC / ST / PwBD candidates: Exempt. Payment via SBI Net Banking, Visa/Mastercard, or cash at SBI branches.

9Study Plan (Prelims + Mains)

Month 1–2UPSC Prelims Foundation

Since IFS Prelims is the same exam as UPSC CSE, prepare together. Cover NCERT books Classes 6–12 for History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, and Science. Environment & Ecology deserves extra focus for IFS — it carries high weightage. Target 40 quality questions daily with full analysis of errors.

Month 3Prelims Intensive + Optional Subject Selection

Finalise your two optional subjects based on academic background — Forestry, Botany, Zoology, Agriculture, or Chemistry are popular among IFS aspirants. Begin one optional subject this month. Practice CSAT Paper II (qualifying) to be safe — target 100+ out of 200 with steady practice.

Month 4Prelims Revision + Optional Paper 1 Completion

Complete Prelims revision: revise all NCERTs once. Complete Paper 1 of your first optional. Solve 10 years of IFS Prelims GS papers. Target 120–130 out of 200 in GS Paper 1 mocks. Do not underestimate Current Affairs — read monthly compilation PDFs for environment, biodiversity, forest policy.

Month 5Mains Preparation Begins (after Prelims)

Post-Prelims: start Mains immediately without waiting for results. Focus on General English (Paper I) — practice précis writing, essay writing, comprehension, and grammar daily. 500-word essays on environment, forests, biodiversity, climate change, and national policies carry huge weightage.

Month 6Optional Subjects Deep Dive

Both optional subjects (4 papers) carry 800 marks of the 1400-mark Mains. Answer writing is critical — practice minimum 5 structured answers daily per subject. Draw diagrams wherever possible (especially for Biology, Botany, Zoology). Previous year papers reveal repeat topics — identify and master them first.

Month 7–8 (Interview Prep)General Knowledge + Personality Test

GK Paper II (300 marks): covers Environment & Forest Policy, Wildlife Acts, Biodiversity Conventions, Climate Change Agreements, Economic Policies, Constitutional matters. Prepare forest-specific current affairs thoroughly. For the Interview: be well-versed in your home state forests, national parks, tiger reserves, environmental issues, and recent government schemes on green energy and climate.

12Expert Preparation Tips

🌳

IFS Prelims is the same exam as UPSC CSE Prelims — prepare them together. This is the biggest advantage: you get two shots at All India Services with a single Prelims preparation. But note that if you clear CSE Prelims, you must separately register for IFS Mains.

🔬

Choose your optional subjects strategically. Forestry is the most exam-specific but has fewer resources. Botany + Zoology, or Agriculture + Forestry are popular combinations with high scoring potential if your academic background matches.

📝

The Mains exam is entirely in English (unlike UPSC CSE which allows Indian languages). Paper I – General English (300 marks) tests formal writing, précis, comprehension, and essay. Practise writing one 600-word essay daily from Month 5.

🏞️

Environment & Ecology is the highest-weightage topic across both Prelims GS Paper I and Mains GK Paper II. SHANKAR IAS Environment notes and annual UPSC Environment supplement are the two must-read resources — cover them before anything else.

⚖️

Know Indian forest laws and policies thoroughly: Indian Forest Act 1927, Wildlife Protection Act 1972, Forest Conservation Act 1980, Biological Diversity Act 2002, CAMPA, National Forest Policy 1988. These appear in every IFS Mains GK paper.

💡

IFS Mains optional papers are at honours-degree level. If you're from a science/engineering background, match your optional to your B.Sc./B.Tech. subjects. Scoring 150+ out of 200 in each optional paper is achievable only with academic familiarity.

🗺️

The Personality Test assesses your suitability as a field officer. Be prepared to discuss your home state's forests, national parks, tiger reserves, major environmental issues, and recent Supreme Court orders on forests. Read the forest annual report of your state.

📊

Only 80 vacancies for 2026 — IFS is among the most selective All India Services. Clear Prelims cutoff first; the Mains score carries 82% of the final merit (1400 marks). One well-written optional answer can mean the difference of 10–15 rank positions.

13Frequently Asked Questions

What is UPSC IFS 2026 Prelims date?
The UPSC IFS 2026 Prelims is scheduled for 24 May 2026. It is conducted as the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination — the same question paper as UPSC CSE Prelims. Candidates must apply separately for IFS using the Common Application Form on upsconline.nic.in.
Is the UPSC IFS Prelims exam different from UPSC CSE?
No — the Preliminary Examination is exactly the same exam. The same question paper (GS Paper I + CSAT Paper II) is used for both Civil Services and Indian Forest Service shortlisting. However, the Mains examinations are completely different: IFS Mains has 6 papers focused on science/technical subjects (General English + GK + 4 Optional papers), while CSE Mains has 9 papers including Essay, GS, and Language papers.
What educational qualification is required for UPSC IFS 2026?
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree with at least one of these subjects: Agriculture, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Zoology, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Forestry, or Engineering (Agriculture, Chemical, Civil, or Mechanical). A general graduation degree without these subjects does not qualify for IFS.
What is the UPSC IFS 2026 salary after joining?
Entry-level IFS officers (ACF – Assistant Conservator of Forests) are placed at Pay Level 10 under the 7th Pay Commission with a starting basic pay of ₹56,100/month. With DA, HRA, and field allowances, the approximate in-hand salary is ₹90,000–₹1,00,000/month at joining. Senior officers (PCCF) receive the apex pay of ₹2,25,000/month plus perks. The 8th Pay Commission, expected to be implemented from 2026, is likely to revise all pay levels upward.
How many attempts are allowed for UPSC IFS 2026?
General/EWS candidates: 6 attempts (up to age 32). OBC candidates: 9 attempts (up to age 35). SC/ST candidates: unlimited attempts within age limit (up to age 37). PwBD candidates: General/EWS — 9 attempts; OBC — 12; SC/ST — unlimited. Each attempt counts only if you appear in Prelims GS Paper I, not just by submitting the application.
