TNPSC Group 2 2026 Notification: 821 Posts & Your 82-Day Plan
Notification No. 07/2026 is out. Here is what the 87-page document actually says, where the seats are, the eight things that get applications rejected — and how to use the 82 days you have left.
- 821 posts — 41 Group II Services + 780 Group IIA Services (Notification No. 07/2026, Advt. No. 740, dated 11 August 2026).
- Apply by 9 September 2026, 11.59 PM at tnpscexams.in — not the main tnpsc.gov.in site. Correction window 13–15 September.
- Prelims: 1 November 2026, 9.30 AM – 12.30 PM. The Annual Planner said 25 October; the notification overrides it.
- No interview. Your rank comes from Paper II of the Main Examination alone.
- No penalty for wrong answers — but 0.5 mark is cut for every blank. Darken option [E] rather than leaving anything empty.
- Any degree qualifies for most posts. No maximum age limit for SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC and BCM candidates — with one exception, Deputy Commercial Tax Officer.
Why the TNPSC Group 2 2026 notification is not what you read yesterday
The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission published Notification No. 07/2026 (Advertisement No. 740) for the Combined Civil Services Examination – II on 11 August 2026. Many websites had already written their articles from the Annual Planner, which is a tentative year-ahead programme — and several details moved between the planner and the notification.
Work from a planner-based article and you are preparing for the wrong date, the wrong number of stages, and possibly the wrong marking strategy. Here is the correction.

The TNPSC Group 2 2026 dates that actually matter
Four of these are hard deadlines. Miss any one and no representation will help you — the notification says so in plain language.

⚠️ The correction window is not an extension of the deadline. The notification says it opens after the last date so that candidates can edit the details in their online application — it is for fixing a form you have already submitted, not for submitting a new one. Treat 9 September, 11.59 PM as final.
Where the 821 TNPSC Group 2 2026 posts actually are
A headline number tells you nothing about your odds. The interesting story in this notification is how lopsided the distribution is: 780 of the 821 posts (95%) sit in Group IIA, and a large share of those are the single designation “Assistant” spread across departments and districts.

Three things buried in the vacancy tables
- The count can still change. The notification states in so many words that the number of vacancies notified is tentative and liable for modification until the publication of the preliminary examination results, and that the number of candidates taken to later stages will be revised alongside it. Do not treat 821 as final — in either direction.
- Six posts sit under corporations, not departments. Junior Accountant (TN Fisheries Development Corporation), Accountant (TN Handicrafts Development Corporation), Accountant (ELCOT), Male Warden (TN Institute of Labour Studies), Assistant Grade III (TIIC) and Assistant (TN Industrial Co-operative Bank) all show a pay column reading Level 10 (EPF) — Employees’ Provident Fund — with TIIC additionally noted as EPF & EGF and the Co-operative Bank as EPF Pension and Compassionate Pension. Read the pay column, not just the post name.
- One post has no number yet. Assistant, Water Resources (Post Code 2262) is listed with vacancies to be announced later.

Group II or Group IIA — how does the choice actually work?
This confuses more candidates than any other part of the exam. There is one common preliminary examination for both streams. After the prelims, TNPSC draws two separate Mains lists, and the two Mains papers are genuinely different exams.

Two consequences worth planning around. First, if you are aiming at Group II you must be able to reach Chennai for Mains Paper II — budget for it now. Second, the notification states that a candidate already selected for a Group II post will not be considered for Group IIA and cannot attend Group IIA counselling. You are not stacking two chances on top of each other in the way many aspirants assume.
Note the writing load too: a descriptive Group II Paper II is a different skill from a 200-question CBT. If you have never written a timed three-hour descriptive paper, start practising in September.
8 things in the TNPSC Group 2 2026 application that get candidates rejected
Every one of these is written into Notification 07/2026 with the same phrase attached — rejection of candidature after due process. None of them is about how well you study.
Your photo must be taken on or after the notification date, in colour, on a white background, with your name and the date of photography printed at the bottom. Selfies, phone photos and old passport photos are explicitly disallowed. Size 20–50 KB. Get it done this week.
Aadhaar linking is mandatory for creating, renewing or accessing an OTR and for any recruitment notified henceforth. If your OTR is old and unlinked, fix it before you touch the form.
OTR costs ₹150 and is valid five years, but it is only a profile. You must separately click APPLY against Combined Civil Services Examination – II and pay the ₹100 prelims fee. A previewed form is not a submitted form.
BC, BCM and MBC/DC candidates get three free chances; Ex-Servicemen get two; SC, SC(A), ST, PwBD and Destitute Widows are fully exempt. Every application in which you claim the concession uses one chance — even if you never sit the exam. Keep your own count; a false claim means rejection plus a one-year debarment.
You must possess adequate knowledge of Tamil as on the notification date. Upload SSLC, HSC or degree mark sheets showing Tamil as a language or Tamil medium, or proof of the TNPSC Second Class Language Test. Without it you must clear the language test within two years of appointment or be discharged.
PSTM is claimed from 1st standard right through to the prescribed qualification. Partial-duration certificates are rejected outright, and you need one certificate from every institution you attended.
Candidates not belonging to SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC (OBCM) or BCM who have completed five years or more of service since first appointment under the Government of India or any State or Union Territory are not eligible — even if they are within the age limit.
Serving employees must inform the Commission and produce a No Objection Certificate. Pending criminal or disciplinary cases must be declared with the FIR or charge memo uploaded — pendency itself does not affect selection prospects, but concealing it ends your candidature.
The marks you can lose before answering a single question
The prelims is OMR-based, and Notification 07/2026 devotes several pages to how an answer sheet gets invalidated. This is the section almost nobody reads, and it is worth more marks than a week of revision.
- Never leave a bubble blank. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, but 0.5 mark is deducted for every unanswered question. Each question carries an option [E] to be darkened when you do not know the answer. Then tick Yes or No in Part I(IV) and, if No, write how many you left undarkened.
- Affix your left hand thumb impression. Forgetting it costs another 0.5 mark.
- Black ink ball point pen only. A pencil, a different-coloured pen, or a whitener will get the sheet invalidated — not penalised, invalidated.
- Darken the Question Booklet Number correctly. If even one bubble of the QB number is left blank or shaded twice, the sheet is invalidated. A completely blank OMR is also invalidated.
- Do not mark answers in the question booklet. The notification says this alone can lead to rejection of candidature.
- Reach an hour early. Gates close 30 minutes before the exam. Nobody is admitted after that.
Practical takeaway: because blanks are penalised and wrong answers are not, the correct strategy in the last ten minutes is to darken something for every remaining question — [E] if you truly have no idea, a considered guess if you can eliminate even one option.
The honest numbers behind TNPSC Group 2 2026
The minimum qualifying mark in prelims is 90 out of 300, the same for every community. With 200 questions carrying 300 marks, each question is worth 1.5 marks — so 90 marks means 60 correct answers out of 200. That sounds gentle, and it is misleading.
Clearing 90 does not get you a Mains call. The notification says the number of candidates admitted to each Main Examination will be ten times the number to be recruited, having regard to the rule of reservation, and that everyone on the cut-off mark is also admitted even if that pushes the ratio past 1:10. On the notified vacancies that arithmetic gives roughly 410 Mains places for Group II and about 7,800 for Group IIA — our calculation, not a figure TNPSC prints. The real cut-off is set by where that line falls, not by the 90-mark floor.
What the paper structure gives you is a fair fight. Look at where the 200 questions come from:

Read that table again. 125 of the 200 questions are SSLC standard — the language paper plus aptitude. Another 40 come from the two units with the heaviest Tamil Nadu content. That is 165 questions available to a candidate who works through school textbooks and state material properly, without touching a single advanced reference book. This is why TNPSC prelims rewards steady revision far more than it rewards clever coaching.
Your 82-day plan from notification to prelims
From 11 August to 1 November 2026 you have 82 days. That is enough for a disciplined first attempt and comfortable for a repeater — but only if the first week goes to paperwork rather than books.
Get the photograph taken with your name and date printed. Link Aadhaar, complete or renew your OTR, gather SSLC and degree mark sheets, community and Tamil-medium certificates. Submit the application this week if you can.
One hundred questions of General Tamil or General English at SSLC standard. Whichever you choose, this is half the paper and the most predictable half. Work through the school syllabus systematically; grammar and vocabulary repay revision better than anything else here.
Units V and VI carry 40 of the 75 General Studies questions. Tamil Nadu economy, welfare schemes, social reform movements, Thirukkural and Sangam-era history. Application closes 9 September; the correction window is 13–15 September — diarise both.
Fifteen questions on Indian Polity and ten on History, Culture and the National Movement. Polity is the highest-yield degree-standard unit per hour invested because the questions are direct and the syllabus is finite.
Ten questions across General Science and Geography of India, and 25 on Aptitude and Mental Ability. Aptitude is SSLC standard — simplification, percentage, HCF and LCM, ratio, interest, area, volume, time and work, plus reasoning, puzzles, dice and series. Twenty-five near-certain marks for anyone who practises daily.
Three hours, 200 questions, a real OMR sheet, black ball point pen. Practise darkening [E] automatically for anything you cannot answer. Review each mock properly — the review is where the marks come from, not the attempt.
No new topics. Revise your own notes and mock errors. Download the hall ticket from tnpscexams.in, keep a photocopy of your Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, passport or voter ID as identity proof, locate your venue in advance, and plan to arrive an hour early.
✅ One honest caveat: 82 days is not enough to build General Studies from zero and master a language paper from zero. If you are starting fresh, put the language paper and Aptitude first — that is 125 questions of SSLC-standard material — and treat degree-standard GS as the part you improve rather than complete.
