13Expert Tips for NICL AO 2026
Insurance GK is the unique differentiator in NICL AO Mains. Most banking exam aspirants neglect it. Spend 4–5 weeks exclusively on Insurance Awareness: IRDAI, types of insurance, PSU insurer profiles, key government insurance schemes. This is where toppers separate themselves.
Prelims has 40 Reasoning questions (highest weightage) vs 30 each for English and Quant. Focus more time on Reasoning in Prelims preparation. Puzzles and Seating Arrangements alone can decide whether you clear the cut-off.
The Descriptive Test in Mains (Essay + Précis + Comprehension, 30 marks) is qualifying in nature — you must pass it to move to the merit list, but its marks are NOT added. Clear it comfortably with 60–65% target. Prepare 8–10 insurance and economy topics for essays.
NICL AO Mains has 250 marks in 180 minutes — that is 43 seconds per question across 5 sections. Time management is critical. Practise with strict timers. Skip time-consuming DI sets if stuck; come back after covering faster sections like Computer Knowledge (50Q in 20 min).
NICL conducts recruitment irregularly — cycles have been every 1–2 years, sometimes longer. Do not wait passively. Simultaneously prepare for NIACL AO, LIC AAO, and IBPS PO — the syllabi are 80% overlapping. NICL AO-specific prep is mainly the Insurance GK section.
After selection, NICL AO officers must pass the "Licentiate Examination" conducted by the Insurance Institute of India (III) during probation. Start reading about it before joining — it tests insurance fundamentals including fire, motor, marine, health, and miscellaneous insurance.
Computer Knowledge (50Q, 50M, 20 minutes) in Mains is the fastest scoring section — 2.4 questions per minute. If prepared well, it can be completed in under 15 minutes, giving you extra time for other sections. Never skip this section during preparation.
Use Oliveboard or Testbook for free NICL AO mocks. After Month 3, attempt at least 1 full-length mock per week. Analyse your Insurance GK score specifically — it is the section where preparation effort pays off most disproportionately.
