106-Month Study Plan

Month 1: Arithmetic & Reasoning Foundation

Build speed on Number Series, Simplification, Percentage, Ratio, SI/CI, and Profit & Loss. For Reasoning, master all Puzzle and Seating Arrangement types — they dominate 60–70% of the section. Daily target: 25–30 questions per section with a timer. Begin reading Economic Times or Mint for 15 minutes every morning to build General Awareness.

Month 2: Advanced DI + English Language

Data Interpretation is the biggest scorer in Mains. Practice Bar, Pie, Line, Tabular, Caselet, and Mixed DI types targeting moderate difficulty. For English, complete 2 Reading Comprehension passages daily alongside Cloze Tests and Error Spotting. Start Descriptive Writing — one insurance-related essay per week from this month.

Month 3: Insurance GK & Oriental Insurance Deep Dive

This is your OICL-specific month. Study Oriental Insurance — its 1947 founding, 1973 nationalisation, five-year plan (multi-line insurer), product portfolio (motor, health, fire, marine, crop), CMD, and IRDAI regulations. Learn the key government insurance schemes: PMFBY (crop insurance), PMJJBY, PMSBY, Ayushman Bharat. Maintain monthly current affairs capsules using Adda247 or Oliveboard free PDFs.

Month 4: Professional Knowledge + Mains Preparation

Study insurance principles (Indemnity, Subrogation, Utmost Good Faith), claim settlement process, reinsurance basics (GIC Re), and new-age insurance types (Cyber, D&O). Take a full-length Mains mock test every 10 days. Practice Descriptive Writing: one essay and one formal letter per week on topics like insurance sector reforms, health insurance penetration in India, and digital insurance.

Month 5: Full Prelims Mock Tests + Mains Revision

Prelims is qualifying — target 55–60/100. Take 2–3 full Prelims mocks per week and analyse error patterns and time management. Shift to advanced Mains-level DI, longer RC passages, and Insurance/GK deep dives. The Prelims cut-off is typically 48–55 for General category — do not underestimate it.

Month 6: Final Revision + Interview Preparation

Revise Insurance Awareness and Current Affairs twice. Take 3 Prelims mocks and 1 Mains mock per week. Prepare for the interview: know OICL's full product range, its parent ministry (Finance Ministry via GIC), CMD name, recent financials, and IRDAI regulations. Practise answers to: "Why OICL?", "What is general insurance?", "Explain PMFBY" — these are standard OICL interview questions.

13Expert Preparation Tips

1

Prioritise Professional Knowledge

Insurance Knowledge is OICL-specific and not commonly tested in other exams. Candidates who invest 20–25% of their prep time here gain a significant edge over those who treat it as an afterthought. Focus on Oriental Insurance products, IRDAI regulations, types of general insurance, and government insurance schemes.

2

Prelims is a Qualifier — Don't Over-Invest

The Prelims is only to filter out weak candidates. The actual competition begins in Mains. Aim for 55–62/100 in Prelims to comfortably qualify, then focus 80% of your energy on Mains preparation after clearing the first stage.

3

Descriptive Writing is Non-Negotiable

The Descriptive Paper (Essay + Letter) is qualifying — but a poor paper can disqualify you even with a strong objective score. Practice 2 essays and 2 formal letters per week from Month 2. Common OICL essay topics: insurance sector reforms, health insurance penetration in India, digital PSU insurance, climate risk insurance.

4

Attempt Sectional Mocks, Not Just Full Tests

For Mains, take sectional mocks for each of the 5 sections individually before moving to full-length tests. This helps you identify your weakest section and fix it before the real exam, rather than discovering it during the exam.

5

Stay Updated on Insurance Sector News

OICL Mains typically features 5–8 questions on recent insurance sector news. Follow IRDAI circulars, PSU insurer quarterly results, new insurance products launched, and FDI policy changes in the insurance sector. Subscribe to a weekly insurance news digest.
