1. What is BPSC TRE 4.0?

BPSC has cancelled Advertisement No. 14/2026 (18 August 2026) and issued Advertisement No. 15/2026 on 22 September 2026 for the same 32,388 posts. The old 1–30 September dates and the Preliminary + Main pattern no longer apply — selection is now through a single written exam. Complete your One Time Registration (OTR) at bpsconline.bihar.gov.in early; fee payment closes a day before the form deadline, on 25 October 2026.
BPSC TRE (Teacher Recruitment Examination) is the examination through which the Bihar Public Service Commission recruits teachers for government schools across Bihar. TRE 4.0 is the fourth phase of a recruitment drive that has already appointed more than two lakh teachers in the state since 2023.
The exam fills four categories of post under the Education Department, Government of Bihar: Primary Teacher (Class 1–5), Middle School Teacher (Class 6–8), Secondary Teacher or TGT (Class 9–10) and Higher Secondary Teacher or PGT (Class 11–12), along with Special School Teacher posts. Appointees are regular, non-gazetted state government teachers (Vidyalaya Adhyapak) who retire at 60.
This exam suits anyone who already holds a teaching qualification — D.El.Ed, B.Ed or B.El.Ed — together with a valid CTET, BTET or STET certificate for the level they want to teach. Without that eligibility test certificate you cannot apply, so it is the first thing to check. With 32,388 posts and no interview stage, TRE 4.0 is one of the largest and most straightforward teaching recruitments running in India right now.

4. 🎓 Eligibility Criteria
A valid TET certificate is compulsory — no exceptions
You cannot apply without a CTET, BTET or STET certificate matching your teaching level, and you may only choose the subject in which you qualified that test. Teachers appointed before 2012 who passed the Dakshata Pariksha are exempt. STET-qualified candidates enter their BSEB Unique ID and result publication date in place of a result card number.
Educational Qualification by Level
Primary Teacher (Class 1–5)
Senior Secondary (Class 12) or equivalent with at least 50% marks plus a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed); OR Class 12 with a 4-year B.El.Ed; OR Graduation with a 2-year D.El.Ed; OR Graduation/Class 12 with a 2-year D.Ed (Special Education) — as per NCTE norms.
Middle School Teacher (Class 6–8)
Graduation with a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education; OR Graduation/Post-Graduation with B.Ed; OR a 4-year B.A.Ed / B.Sc.Ed. The subject combination must match the post applied for (Language, Mathematics & Science, or Social Science).
Secondary Teacher / TGT (Class 9–10)
Graduation or Post-Graduation in the relevant subject group with a minimum of 50% marks, plus B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised institution. Special School Teacher posts additionally require a qualification recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) with a valid CRR number.
Higher Secondary Teacher / PGT (Class 11–12)
Post-Graduation in the relevant subject with a minimum of 50% marks plus B.Ed, or an equivalent qualification recognised by NCTE. The exact postgraduate subject combination accepted for each teaching subject is listed in the notification — check it before choosing your subject.

Nationality, Domicile & Attempts
- Open to citizens of India. Candidates from outside Bihar may apply but are treated as unreserved.
- Reservation, category-wise age relaxation and reduced qualifying marks apply only to original residents of Bihar.
- A candidate may appear in this recruitment examination a maximum of 5 times, under the Bihar Vidyalaya Adhyapak Amendment Rules, 2024.
- Horizontal reservation for women (Bihar domicile) applies as specified in the notification — the Bihar Government's stated policy is 35% reservation for women in state appointments.
- Ex-servicemen get 3 years' relaxation plus their period of service, provided actual age does not exceed 57 years. Serving Bihar government employees get 5 years' relaxation.
- You may list up to 38 district preferences in order of priority.

5. 🪜 Selection Process
Written Examination
One objective paper of 150 questions / 150 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes for your teaching level. Part I (Language) is qualifying at 30%; merit is built from Part II (General Studies) for Class 1–5, and from Part II + Part III (Concerned Subject) for all other levels.
Document Verification
Provisional merit lists are verified by the Education Department against the documents you submitted. The merit list can be revised after this verification. There is NO interview in TRE 4.0.
No interview. TRE 4.0 is decided entirely by written examination and document verification, so your rank depends only on what you score in the single written examination. Guest teachers (Atithi Shikshak) who hold the qualifications for Higher Secondary (Class 11–12) posts receive service weightage of 5 marks per year of service, up to a maximum of 25 marks — added only after they clear the minimum qualifying marks.
6. 📝 Exam Pattern
What changed with Advertisement No. 15/2026. Read this before you start mock tests.
- No Preliminary exam. The cancelled Advertisement No. 14/2026 had proposed a Prelims + Mains pattern. The revised advertisement returns to a single objective written examination for each teaching level.
- 2 hours 30 minutes per paper for 150 questions / 150 marks.
- Negative marking applies. Each question has five options (A–E). A wrong answer costs 1/3 mark — and so does leaving a question blank without marking option (E).

- Objective (MCQ) type; each question carries 1 mark.
- Part I (Language) is qualifying only — a minimum of 30% is required and the marks do not count towards merit.
- Merit is prepared from Part II only for Class 1–5, and from Part II + Part III combined for all other levels.
- Negative marking of 1/3 mark applies to wrong answers and to questions left blank without marking option (E).
- There is no provision for re-evaluation of the written examination.
On exam duration: Advertisement No. 15/2026 specifies 2 hours 30 minutes for each paper. Practise full 150-question mocks in that time, and confirm the duration on your admit card when it is issued.
Minimum Qualifying Marks
These are the minimum qualifying marks for the written examination. The 32% minimum for women and Divyang candidates (including under the 35% horizontal reservation for women and 4% for Divyang candidates) applies only to original residents of Bihar. Reserved-category candidates applying against unreserved posts do not receive reserved-category relaxations.

- Carries 80 of the 150 marks — the single biggest scoring block in the written examination
- Primary (Class 1–5) candidates do not have a Part III paper
8. 💰 Salary & Benefits
The figures above are the starting basic pay notified in Advertisement No. 15/2026 for each teaching level. On top of the basic pay, teachers receive the allowances admissible under Bihar Government rules — dearness allowance (DA), house rent allowance (HRA), medical benefits and other applicable allowances.
All four levels are non-gazetted (araajpatrit) posts in the School Teacher cadre under the Education Department, Government of Bihar. The age of superannuation is 60 years. Postings are within Bihar, allotted according to the district preferences you list in the application form and category-wise availability.
A note on in-hand salary: BPSC has notified the basic pay but not a fixed gross or in-hand figure. Your actual monthly take-home will depend on the DA and HRA rates applicable at the time of joining and on your posting location, then reduced by pension and tax deductions. Be sceptical of any site quoting an exact in-hand figure for TRE 4.0 — the notification does not contain one.
9. 🗓️ Study Plan
Weeks 1–2 · Lock your post, subject and TET status
Before studying anything, confirm three things: which class level you are eligible for, which single subject you will choose, and whether your CTET/BTET/STET certificate covers that level. You may select only one subject — the one in which you qualified the eligibility test. If you are applying on the basis of STET, keep your BSEB Unique ID and result date ready — the form asks for these in place of a result card number.
Weeks 3–6 · Build the General Studies base
General Studies (Part II) counts towards merit at every teaching level, so it gives you the best return on time. Work through elementary mathematics, reasoning, general science and the Indian National Movement using one standard book per area. Do not chase multiple books for the same topic.
Weeks 7–10 · Go deep on your Concerned Subject
Part III is 80 of 150 marks in the written examination — more than half. Read the NCERT and Bihar SCERT textbooks for your subject from the class level you will teach and two levels above it. This is where selected candidates separate themselves from the rest.
Weeks 11–13 · Bihar-specific general knowledge
A BPSC paper is not a generic teaching exam. Bihar history, geography, rivers, districts, state schemes and Bihar’s role in the freedom movement come up regularly. Give this a dedicated slot rather than hoping to pick it up from general current affairs.
Weeks 14–16 · Language paper and full-length practice
Part I is only qualifying at 30%, but failing it ends your candidature no matter how well you scored elsewhere. Spend focused time on grammar and comprehension in English and your chosen second language. Then move to timed full-length papers.
Final phase · Practise the 5-option format specifically
TRE 4.0 uses a five-option answer format with 1/3 negative marking, and leaving a question blank without marking option (E) also costs you 1/3 mark. This is a genuinely new habit. Practise it deliberately in mock tests until marking (E) on every skipped question is automatic.

11. 💡 Expert Tips
Your Concerned Subject paper is where the exam is won
Part III carries 80 of 150 marks in the written examination. Candidates who spread their time evenly across all three parts routinely lose to candidates who treated the subject paper as the main event. Read the NCERT and Bihar SCERT books for your subject cover to cover before you touch a guide book.
The 5-option format punishes blank answers — this is new
BPSC now uses five options (A–E) and deducts 1/3 mark for a wrong answer. Critically, it also deducts 1/3 mark if you leave a question completely blank without marking option (E). If you do not want to attempt a question, you must actively mark (E). Many careful candidates will lose marks purely out of old habit.
Do not ignore the qualifying Language paper
Part I is worth 30 marks and only needs 30% to clear, which makes it easy to postpone. But failing it disqualifies you outright regardless of your General Studies and subject scores. A few hours a week on grammar and comprehension is cheap insurance.
Bihar-specific GK is a reliable scoring block
Questions on Bihar’s history, districts, rivers, state schemes and its role in the freedom movement appear consistently. Most candidates prepare national-level general knowledge well and leave Bihar content to chance. A physical map of Bihar’s 38 districts on your study table is worth more than it sounds.
Choose your 38 district preferences with real thought
You list up to 38 districts in order of priority, and posting follows that order against category-wise availability. Once the fee is paid you cannot change your post or subject without cancelling the payment and starting over. Decide before you pay, not during the form.

A valid CTET, BTET or STET certificate matching your class level is compulsory, and you may only choose the subject in which you qualified that test. STET-qualified candidates enter their BSEB Unique ID and result publication date in the form. Check your certificate details now, not on 26 October.
