About UPSC Exams

The Union Public Service Commission is a constitutional body set up under Articles 315 to 323 of the Constitution. It recruits officers for the All India Services and the Central Civil Services, and it also runs the entry examinations for officer cadres in the armed forces and the central engineering and medical services.

Most UPSC examinations follow a three-stage structure: an objective Preliminary test used only for screening, a descriptive Main examination that decides the bulk of your marks, and a Personality Test or Interview. The Preliminary marks are not carried into the final merit list. Entry-level defence examinations such as NDA and CDS replace the interview with the Services Selection Board process and a medical board.

Eligibility varies by examination. Civil Services and Engineering Services require a graduate degree, while NDA is open to candidates who have passed or are appearing for Class 12. Attempt limits, age relaxations for reserved categories, and the year-by-year schedule are published in the UPSC Annual Calendar on the Commission’s own website before each cycle begins.

Selection style
Prelims (screening only) → Mains (descriptive) → Interview / Personality Test
Where to apply
One common registration on the UPSC portal, then a separate application per examination
Attempt limits
Civil Services caps attempts by category; most other UPSC exams do not
Watch for
The Annual Calendar, published well ahead of the year, fixes every notification and exam date

UPSC Exams — Frequently Asked Questions

Which UPSC exam should a beginner start with?
It depends on your qualification. If you are still in Class 12, NDA is the natural entry point. Graduates in any stream can attempt Civil Services or CDS. Engineering graduates have the additional option of Engineering Services, which rewards the technical subjects you have already studied and has far fewer applicants than Civil Services.
Do Preliminary marks count towards the final UPSC merit list?
No. In Civil Services and Engineering Services the Preliminary stage is purely a screening filter. Once you clear the cut-off, those marks are discarded and your final rank is decided by the Main examination and the Personality Test alone.
Is coaching necessary to clear a UPSC exam?
No. Every year candidates clear without formal coaching. What actually matters is a fixed syllabus-first approach, standard reference books, consistent answer writing practice for the descriptive papers, and regular revision of previous years’ question papers, all of which are freely available.
