About Police Exams

Police recruitment splits between central and state. The Staff Selection Commission recruits Constables (General Duty) for the central armed police forces and Sub Inspectors for the Delhi Police and the central forces. Each state separately recruits its own constables and sub inspectors through a state police recruitment board.

The selection sequence is broadly consistent: a written or computer-based test, then a Physical Standard Test measuring height, chest and weight, then a Physical Efficiency Test covering running and, depending on the force, long jump, high jump or shot put, and finally a detailed medical examination. Falling short at the physical stage ends the process regardless of your written score.

Physical standards are relaxed for women, for candidates from Scheduled Tribes, and in several forces for candidates from hill regions and specified states. Qualification requirements run from Class 10 for some constable posts through Class 12 to graduation for Sub Inspector grades, and age windows are generally narrower than in clerical recruitment.

Selection style
Written test → Physical Standard Test → Physical Efficiency Test → medical
Physical standards
Relaxed for women, Scheduled Tribe candidates and several hill and border regions
Qualification range
Class 10 or 12 for constable grades, graduation for Sub Inspector
Medical
Vision, chest expansion and flat foot are the most common grounds for rejection

Police Exams — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SSC GD Constable and SSC CPO?
SSC GD recruits Constables (General Duty) into the central armed police forces and requires Class 10. SSC CPO recruits Sub Inspectors for the Delhi Police and the central forces and requires a graduate degree. Sub Inspector is a supervisory rank with a higher pay level and a faster promotion path.
What happens if I fail the physical test?
You are out of that recruitment cycle, regardless of how well you scored in the written examination. The Physical Standard and Physical Efficiency Tests are qualifying in nature, not scored — you either meet the stated standard or you do not. Some forces allow an appeal against a Physical Standard measurement, but not against a failed efficiency test.
Are physical standards the same for men and women?
No. Height requirements are lower for women, the chest measurement requirement does not apply to them, and the running distance and qualifying time are set separately. Exact figures differ by force and by state, so always work from the notification for the specific recruitment you are applying to.
