About Railway Exams

Indian Railways is among the largest employers in the country. Recruitment is handled by the Railway Recruitment Boards for most technical and non-technical posts, by the Railway Recruitment Cells for Level 1 Group D posts, and separately for the Railway Protection Force.

Selection is built around Computer Based Tests. Non-technical and technical posts typically run a first CBT for screening and a second CBT that decides merit, followed by a skill or aptitude test where the post demands it, then document verification and a medical examination. Group D and the Protection Force add a Physical Efficiency Test.

Qualifications span Class 10 or an ITI certificate for Group D and Assistant Loco Pilot, through Class 12 or graduation for non-technical categories, up to a diploma or engineering degree for Junior Engineer. Medical fitness standards are strict and vary by post, since many railway roles are safety-critical.

Railway Exams — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between RRB and RRC recruitment?
Railway Recruitment Boards handle Level 2 and above posts such as NTPC, Assistant Loco Pilot, Technician and Junior Engineer. Railway Recruitment Cells handle Level 1 Group D posts such as Track Maintainer, Pointsman and Helper. The application portal is the same for both.
Is a Physical Efficiency Test part of every railway exam?
No. It applies to Group D posts and to Railway Protection Force recruitment. Non-technical posts such as Station Master or Goods Guard, and technical posts such as Junior Engineer, have no physical test — but every selected candidate must pass a post-specific medical examination.
Does the second CBT decide the final merit?
For most multi-stage railway examinations, yes. The first CBT is normally a screening filter and its marks do not carry into the final list. Always check the notification for your specific recruitment, since the weighting has varied between cycles.
